The answer to the photo with the face scribbled out was:

Among various people in the photo, there we're Doctor Cliner and Gordon Freemen of Black Mesa, Doctor Breen of Half Life(the face scratched out) and far to the left of the picture, (In between the man with the glasses and the short lady) was Valve's early representation of Cave Johnson(The face had been used in other places aswell) suggesting that Cave once worked as a Black Mesa employee and left, or was fired. This could also tie in with his deep hatred for Black mesa

Although it could be simply because he intends to beat them in the race for funding.

This is however, simply all rumors and Valve has never had any comment on the matter when asked.
