On Monday Oct. 13 halaajam visited LAU.. She was interviewed in the
social media class because of her unique style, and talent.
Yes...You are Beautiful!
Every time you look at the mirror you ask yourself the same question: Am I beautiful?
And you look back at yourself saying: I am but…
I wish I had bigger eyes, No... No a smaller nose and maybe I would look better with fuller lips!
You look again and you get your makeup kit trying to change the beautiful "You" but wait!
she says: “Every woman is beautiful and makeup is here to enhance her beauty.”
Who is she??
She is the one who changed our wrong perception of beauty. She is a person that believes in the power of natural beauty and the philosophy that "less is more". She is the person who believed in herself and trusted that she will reach success. She is the beautiful Hala Ajam.
Hala Ajam ,the Lebanese professional makeup artist and beauty blogger, studied makeup in Beirut and Hollywood. With her specialization in makeup for photography, TV and movies, she worked in fashion photography studios in LA,California, prior to moving back to Beirut. Huge number of celebrities in LA and Lebanon had the chance to feel her brushes’ magic. We mention: the adorable Claudia Schiffer ,Shirine Abed Wahab, Haifa wehbi, and Nawal Zoughby.
She worked with Elie Saab, the international Fashion designer, and with Bassam Fattouh and Fady Kataya in the campaign "Together for Natural Beauty ".
Recently, she got involved in the "Pinkstands4" breast cancer awareness campaign. The Timeout Magazine had included her name among the 40 Lebanese who made the capital great.
On October 13, 2014, we had the chance to meet,Hala, the natural, honest and lovely person. We were asked to prepare questions and we got the chance to know their answers during the social media class.
For me, I had the curiosity to know how she defines beauty. I thought she was going to give me standards but she was totally convinced by replying : “Beauty is being satisfied, is being happy with who you are.”
For her, makeup definitely reflects the personality of the woman because she wants women to look like the best versions of themselves, without being influenced by something that goes against their real identity.
Each woman has her own personality and Hala gets to deal with variety of people. When she was asked about her way in dealing with clients that ask for makeup different from her preferable style she said: “I am there to satisfy my client but using my own technique.”
As we continued our discussion with her, a friend of mine asked her about the obstacles she faced during her journey she said : "Jealousy". And she succeeded to overcome people that were trying to put her down. Why? Because she is full of confidence.
She advises the future makeup artists to Believe in themselves if they want to succeed.
Today, when I ask myself the same question while looking at the mirror, I remember the interview we had and I say in a louder more confident voice: Yes! I am Beautiful because I am satisfied!
“Every Person is Beautiful”
Hala Ajam known also as an inimitable Lebanese-American Mélange is a Lebanese make-up artist; she completed her studies in Beirut and Hollywood. Hala is also known as an expert in make up for photography, TV and movies which gave her the chance to work in a fashion photography studio in LA before she moved back to Beirut and opened her own make up studio in Starco, Downtown.
Hala Ajam worked with many famous celebrities such as Claudia Schiffer, Nawal El Zoghbi, Shereen Abdel Wahab and many others. She also got involved in several campaigns such as PinkStands4 which is a breast cancer campaign that raise awareness and another campaign called Natural Beauty. In addition to a book she published under the title of “Face to Face”.
Ajam, the talented Lebanese makeup artist visited our Social Media Class at LAU on Monday, October 13, 2014. A Q&A session took place whereby she was able to take us to another world with her presence and remarkable ideas and thoughts.
“We become so close and have fun in only half an hour”, she said. This is how she interacts and bonds with her costumers when asked about her relationship with her clients.
I’ve never seen a makeup artist who is able and capable of making her clients happy and confident about themselves until I listened to Ajam’s answer when she said:” Being a makeup artist, my job is to make her feel good about herself.” Hala added by stating that she works in front of a mirror which makes the client see herself, in this way when Hala sees how the client reacts she can know if she is satisfied or not.
“Less is More” is a motto that Hala believes in. When asked about it specifically she said:” It is a word found in history, 60% of the Lebanese women agree upon it.” Ajam insists on the fact that this motto can be used in everything because less is really more. Women want to feel that they are themselves when they look at the mirror that is why she believes less is more in makeup.
With the flow of the interview and the wonderful interaction happening in that class Hala was able to tell us about the different styles of makeup in Beirut and Los Angeles. She talked about how the eye makeup is different in Lebanon and how her first makeup attempt was rejected because in Lebanon another style was being used. “I was against that but everybody was against me,” she said.
Hala Ajam not only a makeup artist but a passionate person who strived with intelligence and patience made her prove herself and become a successful makeup artist emphasizing and insisting on the beauty of women when she said:” Every person is beautiful, makeup is found to enhance what the women has that’s why Less is More.”
LAU meets the natural beauty queen
Inspired by magazines, moody, self confident and artistic Hala Ajam is now one the most famous Lebanese make up artists; she studied the art of make up in Beirut and in Hollywood. She worked in a studio in LA then came back to Beirut, Lebanon, to work in the city in which she was born, the city she loves. Ajam was one of the first artists to introduce special effects on TV in Lebanon (at the times when Lebanese make up artists still used ordinary make up pens to create the effect).
After her successful career in TV and magazines, she opened her own studio (located in Starco, Downtown Beirut), and is now known by her big name and special techniques.
On Monday October 13th, 2014, Hala visited LAU, specifically our social media class, and we were given the chance to ask her questions;
here are some of the questions that we asked her.
I started working in 1993, for Future TV; they were auditioning TV presenters so I did the makeup for the first one, then did the makeup for the second one, then the third. After that, they asked me to come back the day after and do the same for the rest of the women who are auditioning, so I asked them if I got the job and they said yes. I left after a year.
Reaching the stars started with Queen Rania. She saw my makeup on a magazine and asked about the makeup artist who did it, so Elie Saab told her to try me, and she did; after that, pictures of her makeup were posted on magazines, and so the story went on.
In LA, if you were really talented and good at what you do, they directly use you, they want you, and they build something around you. I know about that because I got the offer but I didn't take it so that I stay in Lebanon.
As for the work environment in Lebanon, you have to sacrifice a lot in order to achieve your goal; you could also climb the stairs step by step and it will take you a long time to arrive, but you eventually will, and that is what I did.
Studying in LA gave me more confidence, because I knew that what I have studied was right.
Of course it is; the difference comes within the taste and the time.
When I came to Lebanon, my makeup was rejected; at the time, LBC presenters still had brown lip liner and light lipstick colors and I wanted to change that. I was young and everyone was against me; it took patience and time to change their style.
Some of the westerners are hard; all Arabs are hard. That is because, the Arab artist might give you a picture and tell you that she wants the same, while westerners leaves you, as an artist, to create something.
At the time, I used to work in magazines, and they believed that my work was different, so they chose me to do her makeup.
Social media helped me 100%. In 6 to 7 years, I made a big name for myself through social media, even though most of the material I use on social media are old.
That is the offer I received in the States 5 to 6 years ago, and I didn't take it, because to start something like that, you need to have lots of money, a big partnership, and too much advertising. But now, with the help of Bobolink and their encouragement for me to do more things, I am calmer and I put the project on pending.
We ended our meeting with an act of support for the breast cancer awareness campaign Pink stands 4:
Last but not least, Hala advices future makeup artists to study it well and to not follow online makeup geeks.
