Ever think about the music played in commercials?
I just watched one for Bud Light (it came up before a YouTube video) and I realized that they cut off the music midway through a phrase
WHICH PISSES ME OFF ALL THE TIME. I hate ending on a half-cadence pointlessly. It leaves all sorts of unfulfilled feelings, no completion, a lead into nothing
Do you think the marketing design team knows this? I mean, even to people who aren't musically inclined can relate to the feeling of a sequence of notes leading to a certain note
Play a major scale, and just stop on the 7th. And then leave. See how you feel. It's that same feeling I get at the end of those commercials that don't end songs on full cadences.
I never really knew the reason I felt this way about this until I took music theory here at Woo. Duda talked about cadences and chord progressions and stuff, and I finally understood why I hate commercials so much. Like, I knew qualitatively why I disliked the feeling of incompletion, but never knew the technical reason why.
Now that I do, I tend to hear it everywhere. And it bugs me.
Especially commercials. Cuz they suck.
Also when people shuffle through songs and don't wait until the song reaches some phrasing ending...
Whenever my sister and I are in the car and listening to music, we both have the same annoyance with phrase-cutting off. So we always just sit in the car til the song reaches an ending point, then we turn it off. It gets funny when I'm feeling less annoyed by things like this for the day and I just turn the car off on a half cadence on purpose. She usually screams at me and hits me until I give her the key to turn it back on til she hears a full phrase. It's entertaining.
That was only slightly related. But yeah.
