Another character! This one’s from a contemporary fantasy setting!
For Baron Samedi, work is always piling up. More and more people are dying every day, and that means more souls for him to escort. Even with the Ghede giving him a hand, he still has his work cut out for him. Between the tedium, his drinking habit, and sheer numbers, he was bound to start getting sloppy eventually. A soul taken a few seconds before the body dies, the odd trimmings of a reaped soul drifting to the ground, that sort of thing. He didn’t think much of it. He simply thought it wasn’t a big deal. So imagine his surprise when Papa Ghede jokingly revealed he had a daughter. Well, sort of.
See, after billions of these leftover shreds of souls drifted together, they intertwined with one another, creating a whole new soul, that of a little Haitian girl who could freely move between the lands of the living and the dead. One that wasn’t a human’s, but one that wasn’t a loa’s, either. One that Papa Ghede found difficult to sense(but not impossible), and impossible to mind read, as she was technically not in the realm of the living or that of the dead.
This little girl was raised by the Ghede, running errands and helping with tasks once she was old enough. The Ghede spent so much time calling ‘Clairin!’ to get her to bring it to them that it eventually got shortened to ‘Claire!’ which she took as her name. Eventually, Claire got bored and wandered off to the land of the living, going by Claire Black. After spending some time wandering around the world, she eventually found a (mostly) human mortal who caught her interest. After learning that he was a little aware of the supernatural world, but mostly clueless about it, she became his assistant for him due to not having anything else to do. He went with it because he had literally no way of stopping her from doing so.
Claire can freely adjust her apparent age, able to look as young or as old as she likes. Due to her origins, she shares some traits with her “Uncle Sammy” in, being an Afro-Hatian with black hair and dark glasses. Although she will fluctuate between apparent ages, both to help her boss and for her own amusement and convenience, she mostly sticks to two ages. That of a pre-teen girl, and that of a woman in her late teens or early twenties. Both appearances share some traits. Her hair color, skin tone, and bags under her eyes stay constant no matter what the age (barring some gray hairs at the later years) and she always has a tattoo of a skull on her right shoulder.
As a pre-teen, she tends to wear black sweatpants, a purple T-shirt, and black sneakers, with her hair in a ponytail and her nails painted with smiley faces on them.
As a young woman, she often wears denim shorts and a dark purple tank top, as well as black combat boots. She also has a tongue piercing, two earrings, and a left arm covered in purple and black vine tattoos.
Even though Claire enjoys using her younger form for her own amusement, she is still a half-loa, and one who was partially raised by Baron Samedi himself. Because of this, she’s grown a similar sense of humor, with a preference for dark humor and dirty jokes, not caring how some mortals receive them. She also picked up his habits of drinking heavily and chasing after mortal women, though she does have a moral compass closer to a mortals than to his. Though that doesn’t mean she’s an angel; she’ll happily play dirty at whatever she does, from cheating at cards to messing with someone’s perceptions if she sees a reason to. She often has one night stands with anyone she can pick up, though she never leads someone on, lies to them about her intentions, and always uses healing magic on them, even if they were hurt prior to meeting her. Besides her bad sense of humor, she’s not usually a malicious person. Whenever she does things for her amusement, she does everything she can to avoid getting people hurt who don’t deserve it. She’s a little snarky, but she’s generally kind and nice to anyone she meets. She’s also completely loyal to her boss, sticking with him no matter what. That said, she doesn’t treat him like a superior. Even though she calls herself his assistant, she acts as a mentor to him since he doesn’t know as much about the supernatural world as her.
As a half-loa, she has supernatural powers, though she hates to use them in the land of the living. It physically causes her pain, and she can even die if she overexerts herself. Fortunately, her most useful power is immortality of a sort. Even if her physical body dies, she can be revived if even a piece of her body is brought to a place that has either a strong connection to life, or death. Some examples would be a maternity ward at a hospital, a packed nightclub, or a tunnel of love ride at an amusement park. As long as the place has strong energy related to birth or places where people have strong positive emotions, she’ll be revived if a piece of her is brought there. As for the latter, places with a strong connection to death would be a cemetery, a cremation oven, a morgue, or a museum. If a place has a strong connection with endings, she’ll be revived. This includes places like museums, or the last part of something monumental (like the last person who participated in an event, or the last concert of world famous musicians.) When revived, the portion of her that wasn’t brought to the location turns to ash, and her body appears completely whole where the piece makes contact with the location.
In addition to her controlled aging and immortality, she’s also inherited a few other things from her ‘father.’ She has healing powers, able to heal any living being who’s still technically alive. To count as ‘alive,’ the person’s heart must be beating (even if it’s through chest compressions,) the person must have their eyes open, and the person still have brain activity. This means she can’t heal someone who’s brain-dead, or bring someone back to life, but she can heal anyone else, even if nothing natural can save them (decapitation, for instance, though she admittedly has to work fast in that case.) She can also move freely between the lands of the living and the dead, able to transition between the two at any place that fulfills the same criteria as her resurrection ability. This also means she can teleport between these places, since both time and distance works differently in the land of the dead; she can just enter the land of the dead from the land of the living at point A, and just travel back, arriving at point B. She can also use this ability to bring any being there, through the Baron strongly dislikes that, usually killing who or what she brings unless she has good reason. This means she can kill any being that’s ‘unkillable’ even if something’s keeping them moving. If she or the Baron buries it in a grave in the land of the dead, that takes priority over anything else. For instance, she can kill a lich for good, even if their phylactery is still intact.
