“Child of the Wilderness”
Half-Face is a very special character to me. Over the years he has grown so much, and I'm really proud of that, my hapless Romeo. Half-Face is diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, PTSD and Autism. I wanted to make sure I didn't succumb to the common narrative trap of making the nervous character overly cute and shy, so I tried to give him traits that aren't shown very often in characters with PTSD and Autism. His symptoms often manifest as intense frustration, which outsiders don't understand, and he has trouble controlling these emotions, and the more he tries to hide them the more overwhelmed he becomes. I wanted to show through him that Autism and PTSD does not have to be "cute" in order to be accepted. At the same time, Half-Face is gentle and profound, and believes strongly in the strength of love, and that love can be freeing even if it is one-sided, and his story really focuses on that. He is based on Buster Keaton, which is where the pose comes from. He is prone to accidents, but that doesn't stop him from getting back up.
