Midling (half-elf, half-quickling) Player Race for 5e: Gotta Go Fast!
Midlings are as their name suggests. They are middling in the many traits that make their parental species great. They’re graceful, but not as graceful as elves. They’re fast, but nowhere near as fast as quicklings. They’re not quite fey, but they’re not exactly ordinary humanoids. Midlings come about when an elf makes a pact with a quickling to do them some sort of favour. Invariably, even if many years pass in the meantime, the elf’s next child is always born as a midling rather than an ordinary elf. Why would a quickling want this? It’s not fully known, but it is known that quicklings only live 15 years thanks to the curse that allows them to move at such incredible speeds. Perhaps the midling child is a small part of them reincarnated, created so they can enjoy living just a little longer?
You can roll on the following table to decide on a set of quirks that manifest in your midling character.
You can’t sit still, even for a second. During a short rest you constantly pace up and down and during a long rest you dream of running, causing your body to mimic the movements as you sleep.
If you drink coffee or any other stimulating substance, you paradoxically become slow and lethargic.
Once you start doing something, you can’t stop until it’s done. This extends to actions such as trying to please or hurt someone or even saying something out loud that you know is a risk.
You become obsessed with new things quickly and get bored just as fast.
Your impending death from old age frightens you. You feel like you’ve always been old, like you’re hurtling towards the end and you can’t do anything to stop it.
To make up for your small size, you either only keep the company of people even shorter than yourself or make friends with the biggest people you can find.
Midlings are nearly always brought up by their elvish parent, meaning that nearly all midlings are given elvish names and raised as elves. In fact, from a certain point of view, midlings are simply elves.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity increases by 2 and your Wisdom increases by 1. Your Strength decreases by 2 and your Constitution decreases by 1.
Age. Quicklings are amongst the shortest-lived of the fey while elves are known for being among the longest-lived of the mortal world. This paradox results in Midlings maturing after just 3 years and living up to 100 years, but also finding that the more they move the sooner they die. Adventurers especially don’t live long.
Alignment. Midlings have a strong chaotic bent to them, with a slight trend towards evil. This is because their impulsive nature often leads them to rash and inconsiderate decisions which push them down the path of evil. A midling with a strongly good nature, however, will simply be kind recklessly.
Size. Midlings are tall for quicklings, but very short for elves, growing to about 2 to 3 feet tall. Your size is Small.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 60ft.
Darkvision. Your fey blood allows you to see in the dark when others would be as good as blind. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of grey.
Uncanny Quickness. Opportunity attacks have disadvantage against you.
Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Elvish and Sylvan.
