Uhhh... *without* getting into any spoiler territory, the thing thats-rough-buddy said about Victoria's powers is definitely not true. I don't want to let any details slip when you're this early in the story though, so I won't specify anything else. Just, maybe let the story explain how powers work at its own pace? I don't want to challenge your assumptions with *different* assumptions that are informed by stuff further down the line in the story if you happen to be avoiding stuff like that.

oh i see. and yeah, while im actually usually the type to look for spoilers to get me hyped about a story, for the sake of liveblog integrity i will avoid that with worm, and that does include things like hinting at stuff further along the story

but if anyone wants to point out stuff i missed or just share some trivia about non-spoiler things like fandom jokes and such, please go ahead and do that

Do you think abuser redemption stories are more harmful than other redemption stories? I suppose I get it, if narratives like that might make victims feel obligated to forgive their abusers to their own detriment, but I feel like one could write a story that doesn't encourage that mentality.

The problem isn’t so much with every individual abuser redemption story that’s every been told. And certainly some of these stories are told in better ways than others. Like I talked about back in January (here), the biggest problem is that the sum of these stories creates a dominant cultural narrative that encourages survivors and victims to feel like they have to forgiven the people who hurt them. And the bigger and more prominent a piece of media is, the more capacity is has to continue to reinforce ideas like this and perpetuate the harm associated with them. Hence why I care about this in BNHA. 

I don’t really have it in me to try to think of all the different possible kinds of redemption stories out there to compare and contrast them to ones about abusers. But again, the issue is that this is real. Some Vegeta-style alien who kills a bunch of people but gets beaten up and joins the good guys, or a Nico Robin style character who helps orchestrates a civil war but has a tragic backstory and only really cared about uncovering the world’s secret history... those things aren’t real. I don’t have to care about stories like them in the way I care about stories of violent husbands and abusive parents. Endeavor might have super powers, but it’s still a story about a guy who beat his kid and put his wife in the hospital.
