These paper mache jack-o-lanterns are sooooo much fun to airbrush. It’s by far my favorite part of an overall very frustrating process. I am thinking about selling unpainted ones, with just a coat of gesso, because I know my kids have loved painting the test batches. I also had my kids stress test the various paper mache formulae, and I can say with confidence that these little guys can take a surprising amount of abuse.

102018 - Halloween Lantern
Happy Halloween!
I don’t celebrate, but still I wanted to share a piece with you!
I just love the whole What If? AU of Harry Potter, with James and Lily being alive... and i decided they deserved some nice holiday together... so i made this. It’s only a line art, but i may be coloring it some day.

It’s not my usual, but this is my crowning achievement of paper craft. This is a 3d paper mache Halloween lantern. If it looks like the antique ones, that’s because I spent two years figuring out how to make molds and formulate paper mache so that it could be pressed into a hollow, cohesive, three dimensional piece.
The original run of these lanterns sold out in less than a week, which was incredibly gratifying after the literal years of trial and error that preceded them. Unfortunately, when I move this last year those molds broke, and I have to start over at square one making a new model from which to make new molds. There are many other Halloween characters I would love to turn into lanterns, but right now I’m working very hard on all the boring behind the scenes stuff.
Just sold a lantern! He’s heading off to his new home in time for the holiday season.
Green blush and tissue paper has been added. As soon as I add the wire and finishing touches these guys will be listed!
