JBL | Actor Interview Excerpts - Junho
◇ What’s left in the end: the preciousness of ‘people’
Kang Doo was an unfortunate person who experienced hardship from a young age, but he was surrounded by good people. Halmeom (Na Moon Hee), Mari (Yoon Se Ah), and Sang Man (Kim Kang Hyun) were all on Kang Doo’s side. Junho also nodded saying, “Kang Doo is blessed with good people in his life.”
Lee Junho elaborated, “I think Kang Doo was able to endure even when he lived while constantly consuming himself thanks to the people around him. He lives for the sake of the people around him who are in similar situations, doesn’t he? The love he has for those people, that’s how he goes on. For those of us living ordinary lives, it seems like a very small thing, but for those characters, that truly was everything.”
JBL Character Quotes | Ep. 11
KD: [There’s something I didn’t tell you before because I was angry. They say when people die, they return to when they were the most beautiful. So don’t worry...your groom will be totally smitten with you....I’m worried for me. That I might completely fall for you.] Later on....if I hit on you, don’t pretend like you don’t know me...curse me out once...so I can know it’s you. Hm?....You can’t pretend to not know me.
MS: That’s true now as well but...I’m going to hold it in. If he’s with me...I think Kang Doo will continue to pretend he’s fine. Right now he has to be really sad. That’s the only way he’ll feel at ease later on. None of us were able to do that, were we? We just got mad each other. Because we were sorry.
HM: Be happy with all your might.
KD: I can’t do this one...
MS: For that instant, it really seemed like Halmoni was alive. Because she left us so many things. But...it would seem that there is such a thing as inconsolably deep sorrow.
MR: Just the same, what’s just the same? They’re different. Thousands, tens of thousands, billions of people. No matter how many people there are, to me, there’s only one mama. One. Just one.
HM: Hey, hey! There’s nothing so useless in the world as other people’s advice! Don’t be so concerned with other people’s perceptions that you’re afraid to do as you wish and end up suffering and acting rashly. Live however you please! Got it? [KD: Heh, then what do you call this? Isn’t this advice?] This is an order.
KD: [Kang Doo, that kid, even while being hit that badly, he kept hold of the rock till the very end. So I asked him. ‘Why were you holding that if you couldn’t even hit with it?’ What do you think he said?] Because I was scared. [He wanted to run away, but he thought if he did I would really be beaten to death. He said that if he was at least holding the rock, he felt like he could endure it. That’s what sort of kid he is.]
MS: I’m not leaving. You don’t look fine! You also saw me when I was pathetic, when I was being foolish. I’m staying by your side.
KD: [I clearly said to go.] If you don’t leave now...I’m not letting go of this hand.

JBL Character Quotes | Ep. 8 [Pt. 2]
KD: Is that bad? If you’re going to fail anyway, isn’t better to at least do it in a way that’s not shameful?
MS: It’s odd...talking about it with him doesn’t bother me at all.
JW: Cheong Yoo is doing as well as ever, but it seems you think it has nothing to do with you since we’re always fighting amongst ourselves. Don’t speak so carelessly. Cheong Yoo just hasn’t been punished. That doesn’t mean your wrongdoings have disappeared.
YJ: Why are you so calm? You also knew about Lee Kang Doo’s father? Interesting....are you sympathizing with him because you can relate? If that’s the case you should have jumped in and stopped it! Instead of letting him go through that alone. Coward.
MS: This uneventful moment in which today becomes tomorrow. I really like it.
DC: What grand work did I think I was doing that I don’t know how my kids grew up...that I don’t know how she died?...What’s the point in saying it? It’s not as if I can take it back...
KD: And if I say sorry? Is that a fix-it-all? Does that solve everything?
HM: I used my strength for nothing. People who are meant to meet will meet even if you just leave them be.
YJ: No matter how disinterested, it’s human nature that people can’t just sit and watch what’s theirs being snatched away.
DC: She’s way better than me. She’s been through enough hardship. Now she has to live well, being treated with just as much care.

HM: You...if I happen to go without getting to say goodbye...
KD: Seriously?? Why would you say something so unlucky?!
HM: Hear me out. There’s no chance of me getting tired of waiting for you, so come very very slowly. Don’t rush.
KD: No, you go as late as possible! Otherwise I’m going to get twisted. Without you here, who’s going to curse at me to live properly?
HM: Hey, hey! There’s nothing so useless in the world as other people’s advice! Don’t be so concerned with other people’s perceptions that you’re afraid to do as you like and end up suffering and acting rashly. Live however you please! Got it?
KD: Hh, then what do you call this? Isn’t this advice?
HM: This is an order.
In a drama full of wonderful characters with truly relevant life advice, Halmeom (Gran) takes the cake. She has so many wonderful lines that it’s honestly hard to choose just one. The above is the final exchange we see between her and Kang Doo (not within the dramaverse but from a viewer’s perspective) and I think it beautifully sums up who they were to each other. Halmeom may have left, but she lives on in Kang Doo. They may not have been connected by ‘blood’ but they were family in all the ways that count.
Also, because I pretty much love Kang Doo with everyone:

JBL Character Quotes | Ep. 10
MS: And what of pain that can’t be endured? What about people who can’t overcome it and suffer their whole lives? The people who couldn’t bear it and already died...what do they say God does for them? I won’t believe.
HM: Do you know that squirrels will take two acorns and keep one in their mouth, while the other they bury, leaving it in the ground to eat during the winter? They do all that work, huh? Those dummies, later on they can’t find it to eat it and forget about it...it’s a waste. But in exchange for it breifly being a waste, from those acorns that were burried in the ground during the winter, sprouts grow and become trees, which in turn become forests. For us it’s such a thankful thing. If you’re having too hard a time, forgetting and burying everything is also a method [of coping]. How can you know how that will be solved later on?
MR: [JYT: What is that bastard to you?] I owe him my life.
MS: Kang Doo...does he know? You have to tell him. If he finds out after the fact he be really hurt. I was there too....the shopping mall accident. Things that occur suddenly without any preparation are scary and I hate them. I’m like that...so Kang Doo will be like that too. You absolutely have to tell Kang Doo.
MS: Kang Doo is...different. If I can’t see him I’m curious and I worry about him, he’s on my mind.
KD: What do you mean what’s the problem?! Look at me! Do I look like I’m in any position to be liking someone right now?! // Crazy bastard...even while worrying that you were ill, ‘If I go, I can see Moon Soo.’ That’s what I thought, this crazy bastard...
HM: Do you know what it is that people die from the most? Hm? Cancer? Accidents? Suicide? It’s none of those! People die from hardships! Because of their hardships, they can’t receive treatment even if they’re sick. In order to escape hardship, they do rough work and die of accidents. They hate living in hardship, so they end their own lives! People die of hardship! What, a measly tumor? I’m not even slightly scared, out of the way!
MS: The reason I’m uneasy right now is because I can’t stay by Kang Doo’s side, I think that’s it. That’s right. That’s what it was.
MS: I’ll come again tomorrow! I’ll come tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that, too. Until I come to dislike you, I’ll keep coming.
KD: Halmeom once said this: that, ‘Life is a repetition of regrets and failures.’ I sarcastically replied, ‘If that’s the case, what’s the point in living?’ Halmeom spoke again, saying, ‘To regret and fail in an even more splendid manner.’ ‘So, don’t lose your nerve,’ she said.
JBL Character Quotes | Ep. 9
KD: I’m going to run away. Because that’s what’s better for Moon Soo.
MS: What you’re saying is that if I date someone normal I’ll also appear normal, isn’t it? You want me to pretend as if nothing happened, conceal everything...to hide behind someone else like that? That’s fake. What about you, dad? You can’t even do that yourself...
MS: Who do you think you are?! No matter who I go to, that’s up to me! Who are you to tell me to go or not? Why are you deciding my heart as you please? Even if I go, I’ll be the one to go. I won’t go because you told me to!
YJ: It’s because [my blood] is no different that I’m concerning myself. Because from the outside, brother and I look exactly the same. From now on I’ll deal with Lee Kang Doo’s affairs. You butt out.
KD: Compared to when I hurt it...the pain when I was receiving treatment was more gruesome. [‘Ah — if it’s going to hurt this much just cut it off,’ I told them. ‘I’ll just pretend I never had it to begin with.’ But even if it’s like this, think about what it would be like without it? Something terrible nearly happened...] That’s when the doctor told me.‘If you want to mend a damaged part, you have to go through pain even greater than when you damaged it. That’s the only way wounds heal.’ [Even if it’s difficult....so that Moon Soo can see it through to the very end, please help her by her side.”]
MS: Apologize to Kang Doo! Please apologize! You can’t say a word to the people you should really be getting angry with, so you’re just needlessly taking it out on- [Kang Doo]! Apologize!! Who’s insignificant? As you said, instead of just putting up any old memorial stone, Kang Doo is the one going around searching out the bereaved to make a proper one! The work that Kang Doo is doing, it isn’t insignificant. Apologize to Kang Doo, tell him he’s working hard, and tell him ‘thank you.’
YJ: There’s nothing worse than seeing someone wallow in self-pity, but you two are different. You are both...bereaved family and survivors. Even so you show no signs of distress at the accident site...it’s really admirable. Kang Doo is a really strong person, don’t you think?...Or maybe not? Is he different when he’s with you? Does he talk about how he had a hard time after he was injured in the accident?
KD: Don’t be good to me. I’m currently getting reacquianted with my misery.
HM: Do you really know Kang Doo so little? It’s not that he’s disappointed in you, he feels he’s not good enough so he’s avoiding you. He’s like that. He’s clumsy with his emotions. Because he doesn’t know how to take care of himself and others, he doesn’t stay beside people out of the fear of ruining them too. His distancing himself from you means that that’s how much he treasures you.
KD: This life of mine that might only become more twisted in the future. If I’m going to be ruined, it’s better that I’m alone. So…run away.
