honestly what the fuck is old king hamlet’s ghost doing in the opening scene of hamlet. like the guys are all sitting around like “okay ur not gonna believe it but the other night i saw a ghost” and the ghost comes out, says nothing, the guys lose their shit over the ghost, and the ghost leaves. then they talk more about the ghost and he comes fucking back and they lose their shit again and then the ghost leaves again without saying a word. like. did you think they would react differently the second time? what is it about that first interaction went so well that you felt the need to poke your head around the corner a second time

okay i’m still angry i’m going to rant more

like she said “and then rosencrantz and guildenstern come back to the castle for god knows what reason [claudius asked them to come??] only to end up going out to sea and getting killed by pirates [claudius told them to kill hamlet and hamlet finds out and then hamlet has them killed. that’s a pretty crucial detail.]”

 and then she was talking about the weird sexual tension between hamlet and gertrude, which, a) is only shown in some iterations of the play, it’s usually not..interpreted that way, but it’s become a popular interpretation, which i have a hard time swallowing for multiple reasons (a. Disgust and Other Things I Dont Want To Think About and b. in the text hamlet gets like... viscerally upset at the idea of his mother and uncle’s “incestuous sheets” and you interpret that as hamlet ?? wanting to be the incestuous one???? why are directors disgusting??), but anyway she said that gertrude was lusting after hamlet, and, like, no?? a) it’s a stretch to infer from the text that hamlet had any sort of oedipal complex happening. the closet scene isn’t sexual at all imo but, again, interpretations are what they are (even if they’re wrong), and b) even in the few productions which do (heavily) imply incestuous tension, it’s from hamlet directed toward gertrude ? not the other way around? like how are you going to shoehorn in this really subjective interpretation of the play for shock value and then not even care about the details of it as long as you can scream “incest” to a bunch of college students and then 5 minutes later roll your eyes and say “dont even get me started” when someone makes a “triggered!!1″ joke in your fucking classroom. 

and all i can do about it is power through the course and leave a shitty course eval at the end of the quarter. love college

quick hamlet/bad prof rant:

the prof who’s trying to teach us hamlet right now is... very wrong about hamlet and believes that her (wrong) interpretation is the only possible interpretation. won’t hear it when people try to propose other possible interpretations. it says on her fucking ratemyprofessor multiple times that she gets childlishly upset when people object to or counter what she says and i thought it was an exaggeration, but it was right. she also a) doesnt think any of us know what iambic pentameter is (despite the fact that it’s pretty frequently taught at as low as 8th grade) ((and like she genuinely told us that she didnt think any of us would know what it was. i’m not exaggerating)) and b) she doesn’t seem to have a very firm grasp of iambic pentameter herself ? or hamlet for that matter? all she’s done is play youtube videos demonstrating what she ought to at least be attempting to teach us and then, for example, she was playing a short video on shakespearean sonnets and rap music and after a rap verse paused to tell us all that the thing we’d just heard was in iambic pentameter when it most definitely wasn’t, and then later said that all of hamlet is in perfect iambic pentameter but LOL it’s not! most all of it is but there are several lines where Shakespeare fucked up (i mean kudos to him for, yknow, writing hamlet, but still, he fucked up) and i just. i really want to study hamlet under someone who actually appreciates and knows hamlet. hamlet deserves that, not a bunch of youtube videos that are only tangentially related to poetry, let alone shakespeare, let alone hamlet. also, i deserve that? i am giving this college so much money and i’m actually kind of angry that any of that is going to this prof and not someone who can actually educate me. we’re only a fuckin week into classes. god.
