lana del rey is the only true successor to peak 90’s grunge not due to her association with the 2014 grunge aesthetic but because her lyric composition has the exact same impact as nirvana, pearl jam, hammerbox, alice in chains, etc in that they don’t necessarily tell a clear story or easily lend themselves to analysis but are series of fragmented written imagery that evoke a specific feeling which bypasses the brain and strikes the soul. even flow, serve the servants and attack of the slime creatures would make no sense if shown only line by line on paper, but those songs were so vital to my young teen years because you need to feel them and can. the closest thing i can imagine to being 13 and first hearing heaven beside you is listening to born to die for the first time years later and finding that same strange solace. in this essay i will
