Digital Outcomes of Hand Stencils

With scans of the work I have done in class, I created digital outcomes by editing the elements with different colours and placements.

Having arranged the painted stencils separately, I then arranged them to form the full title.

Using the Halftone Bitmap tool in Photoshop, I was able to create a halftoned version of part of one of my earlier designs.

I then added the rest of the title digitally, reusing the halftone to create a simple composotion, but I like how the white space makes the monotone desing stand out.

I also created another version with inverted colours and a texture.

Hand-Stencilled Text

For this workshop we used: A3 cartridge paper, craft knives, cutting mats, plastic boards, rollers, print ink (all colours), scissors, sponges, pens and pencils.

We cut out stencils from paper, and used ink rollers and sponges to spread ink. I enjoyed using the sponge as it allowed me to produce both hard and soft edges with my letters.

I wanted to show indistinct letters and I am happy with the level of legibility. I chose to focus on Saving Private Ryan for this workshop. I think the colours red and black are suitable for the war film and the absence of colour apart from the sharp red reminds me of the colour grading of the film, which is edited to make the blood stand out, while the grey colours reflect the dreary setting and depressing circumstance. I do think that I could have linked it more to the themes of my film.
