Tibet 1997 To be honest we never expected the Chinese to let us in, but they did! The border crossing was effortless and we were now in Tibet! And that was as far as we were allowed to go. We did not have a travel permit and there was a military checkpoints on the edge of the town. So we just wandered around a bit and went for a coffee. Turns out this is just a trading post and most Nepalese just come for a day to do a bit of shopping. Whilst we were pondering what to do we met a really nice Tibetan man who had come down to drop two tourists off who had AMS, and he offered us a lift to Tingri. The travel gods were with us! He only had two permits so one of us had to hide in the back of the Landcruiser under a tarpaulin until we were through the checkpoints. The adventure had begun. The road very quickly climbed through a beautiful pass, the Zhangmu pass (picture) and gained some serious altitude very quickly. Tibet 1997 After travelling India and Nepal for eight months, and having a multiple entry Chinese visa, the most obvious next destination was to head north into one of the most mysterious countries in Asia, Tibet. I am on the other side of the country, but my heart is in California, where another large fire (the County Fire) is burning in Yolo and Napa counties. This is the new paradigm in the West: large, intense fires almost year-round, with the same areas burned, sometimes annually.
