According to a recent report by Technomic Inc., a food industry research and consulting company, handheld food items accounted for nearly one-fourth of the dollars spent in American foodservice last year. As noted in Food Business News, the report said burgers led by a landslide in the category, with 44% of U.S. handheld sales attributed to the juicy American classic. The handhelds that followed were deli sandwiches (at 13%) and submarine sandwiches (at 11%).Classic burgers and sandwiches remain the most-popular handhelds right now, but non-traditional options are growing, thanks to the influence of millennials and Gen Zers, a Technomic executive pointed out.
While 53% of handheld food sales are generated around lunchtime, consumers also are looking for more grab-and-go options during breakfast and snacking occasions. At the same time, they are increasingly favoring other handheld formats, such as tacos, burritos and wraps, during those nonconventional dayparts.
In addition to these handheld carrier trends, foodservice operators should also focus on meeting consumer desire for quality proteins, while examining innovative sauces. Experts believe that exploring new flavors, like sriracha, ghost pepper and ginger, might be another way to entice millennial and Gen Z audiences.
