A way to randomise hand prompts so you can practise drawing them without a reference. Bear in mind this exercise is hard--it’s probably one of the hardest you can do, and it’s designed to be done after already drawing hundred of hands from reference.
Step one: visit this website (https://www.textfixer.com/tools/random-choice.php)
we’ll be using this to generate our random list.
Step two: Copy the list of hand prompts into the randomiser
Here is my list of prompts. Feel free to add or subtract as needed:
holding a cup normal
holding a cup backwards
holding a cup by the bottom
holding a cup by the top
middle finger
first two fingers in a V
high-five
high-five from the back
holding a water bottle
holding a water bottle from the back
unscrewing the lid on a waterbottle
holding a hammer
holding a hairbrush
writing with a pen
writing with a chalk
OK hand sign
pinch
holding a spoon
holding three fingers up
fingers steepled
making a pyramid with both hands
holding a tube
holding a book open
all fingertips together
first two fingertips together
thumbs joined
pinky swear
relaxed hands from front
relaxed hands from back
holding a spoon lightly
holding a glass
holding a cigarette
Step three: press the “Random Choice” button and draw what is suggested without looking at references.
Repeat this step as much as you want.
Again, this exercise is really hard, so be disheartened if the hands don’t turn out as expected. Even though I have drawn... literally hundreds and hundreds of hands, these still turned out not as nice as I’d hoped. The most important thing is pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
