Stock Photos Beyond the Binary
Representation matters. Struck by the lack of pictures of trans and non-binary people doing normal things, artist-activist Zackary Drucker created a database of free-access images. The Gender Spectrum Collection is a stock photo library featuring images of trans and non-binary models that go beyond the clichés.
Drucker told The Guardian:
“There are so few images of trans and gender non-conforming people in stock imagery. Typing transgender into a search engine yields results that are generic – a white trans woman in front of a trans flag, and that’s pretty much it,” says Drucker.
“We were interested in revealing trans and non-binary people in everyday life: falling in love, taking selfies, gossiping, going to school, waiting for a bus. Our identities are so often sensationalised, but we navigate the world and are embedded in society in ordinary ways.”

So here we go, a post about my drawing process, hope you can get something out of it.
I start from searching a composition/character pose by making a bunch of tiny thumbnails (pic.1). They don’t take much time and keep me from useless over-detailing.
When I found something I’m satisfied with I upscale the thumbnail to desired size. Now to get from here to lineart I can take one of three routs: Pic.2. Proper. I don’t take it often enough. Pic.3. I’m an expert, hold my beer. Pic.4. Savage. Works for little drawings/doodles.
Generally, my sketches are varied from bunch of vague lines to roughly constructed objects and more or less anatomically correct “mannequins”(if it’s for a bigger picture), and stuff like clothes I often leave to figure out later in the lineart. I tried to do very elaborate sketches in the past but they would get cluttered and brought more confusion than actual help. Also inking would turn into a burden, because when every little detail has already been laid out, going over everything again felt like I was doing the same thing twice. After all, an undersketch just needs to provide some guidance so a better picture could be built on top of it, it doesn’t matter if it’s clean or looks “good”. And you know that popular problem of hating your lineart because you think that a sketch looked much better? If your sketches never look nice in the first place then that problem is solved, ha! Okay, that may be an ill advice.
For inking part I can’t say anything substantial, I’m afraid. A demonstration of how it goes down is all I can offer, so check two videos at the end of this post.
Now, onto coloring. Going to take advantage of the moment and promote this efficient way of filling in a lineart. I keep seeing people filling in with a brush, and it hurts my non-existent soul when someone desperately tries to not go over the outer edges of the inks; oh honey, what are you doing, grab a magic wand and save yourself some time and effort.
I often keep coloring simple (either giving picture an overall tint of one color, using related colors, or two complimentary colors), because I have hard time managing lots of different colors at once. But I also don’t forget that rule of making hue of shadows opposite to hue of light. On pic.5 there are some old tests of using opposite hues for light and shadow, tad bit extreme but descriptive examples of my approach to shading.
After all of that I might through some correction layers on top of the picture. My favorite crutch is gradient map, it can add an atmosphere to dull coloring, gather a picture full of colors that don’t go together very well, or simply liven up a grayscale drawing.
I rely heavily on different layer modes and correction layers. When everything is separated like that it’s very easy to change color and lighting. There are people who seem to know exactly what result they want to achieve, so they just paint directly on flats, goddamn wizards. I’m never sure of what I’m doing so I stick to my convoluted layer juggling.
And to wrap it up here are time-lapse videos of two recent drawings.
I love the way you color so much!! Do you have any tips on coloring hair?
Thank you! It honestly varies widely because i’m very inconsistent. Lately I’ve mostly just been adding a gradient and coloring the lineart because I’m lazy. However! When I do actually color it it’s some variant of this:
Honestly im a very lazy artist and i don’t follow light sources, I mostly just play around until it looks right. If u want to add highlights, i just do the same process but cover less area with the lighter color.
With the eraser step, I usually do one side of each line of shading and leave the other side mostly untouched.
I hope this makes sense! Like I said, I mostly just do everything haphazardly so it’s hard to describe a process lol
last tutorial from september: the comic shots tutorial. when i was a younger more impressionable artist, my favorite comic author said to draw comic panels like frames of a storyboard or a movie. now that i’m older and have my own thoughts, i understand why someone would say something that i feel is frequently so wrong.
originally, i had a big comics tutorial planned, but i’ve decided to break it down into smaller tutorials. comics are all about efficiency because they are so time-consuming. anything that saves the artist time is a relief, so this is simply a reference for quickly determining what kind of basic shot to use and why a basic shot might look “weird” until you give it a simple fix by cropping it differently. in art, rules beg to be broken, so don’t take it as advice you can’t go against. shot choice is very complex, but i’ll save thoughts on that for a later tutorial.

this picrew is one of the best tbh … i made judith and nemoira !!!
july ‘19 vs september ‘19
so here’s a tiny tutorial about light reflections (i’m no expert though!!)
the drawing made in july is lacking on light reflections
the one done in september looks much better since i paid attention to them
Also remember that the intensity of the lighting depends on the material on which it is reflected, eg. glass / metal / fabrics etc. Glossy surfaces reflect the lighting more than matte surfaces
another example:
i keep reading 'orion' as 'onion' so thats. who they are to me now
ONION……………………….. now im picturing orion as onion from steven universe and i am very stressed out by the thought
MORE ASKS UNDER THE CUT!!! (a lot of asks im sorry)

I have finally done it: I have done a process of how i paint weeeeheeee This is a quick tutorial of how i paint portraits (since thats mostly all i do lol) excuse my unprofessional language. I just tried to transcribe the dialogue that was going on tin my head. As you can see there is a lot of junk stuffed in there (・ω・●) I just want to thank all the kind people who have sent me messages and kind regards. The love in the air is drowning my lungs. This is how i paint generally. I have also been asked how I started painting with colors. A while after I moved to the States, I had an art teacher and he put me under a limited palette method: it was painting with just ultramarine blue, brown sienna, and white. It was meant to teach you how to use warm and cold contrasts. Then slowly he allowed me to use other colors. I’ve grown used to thinking about contrast all day now. There are still many things i’d like to improve. I’m chasing after a few masters. The illustrators I LOVE LOVE LOVE are: George Barbier, Kay Nielsen, Ivan Biblin and Leyendecker. You probably know them already. Their stuff is only too good. So here you go!!! I hope you will enjoy it :)
Your arts are so beautiful and clean, I love it! I'm curious, how do you make some parts of your drawings blurry? Like the blurry background or blurry edges of the image. I always think it makes your drawing has this really nice soft texture to it and feels good to look at ;u;
Thank you ^^
Yes I use blur effect with background
and use soft airbrush for line
or you can use this method
