The Untamed 1.36 || Handsome Siblings 1.34
Straight-laced characters portrayal that grow to me or warm up with later on. I don't like them in the beginning but there's a point that I can say "Oh, they did good in that scene."
Wang Yibo's Lan Wangji (The Untamed) - My issue with him is not only his height not close to book version but because he always look angry in the beginning. I can't really blame Wang Yibo because Lan Wangji as a character is difficult role since he rarely talk and it is from Wei Wuxian's perspective so I Iet it go. Later on, he win me over with subtle micro expressions acting. I do like his Lan Wangji. He got the LWJ vibe eventually once he locked in. He's a very easy learner. To be fair, I also don't like Xiao Zhan's emotional Wei Wuxian but I learned to accept it because cdrama adaption tend to make any character more emotional than book version. It does feel something missing when you don't see them cried.
Li Hongyi's Xiao Se (The Blood of Youth) - Xiao Se might not look the standard straight-laced character because he's jaded but if we're comparing him with Lei Wujie or Wuxin, I want to believe that is his role in the trio dynamic. I watched the donghua so I have an idea how Xiao Se's character roll. Li Hongyi's Xiao Se look always annoyed younger brother in the begnning. Donghua Xiao Se has sassy moments and has the useless big brother vibe. When Li Hongyi started to show his sassy side, that's where I start to like his Xiao Se.
Cheng Yi's Li Lianhua (Mysterious Lotus Casebook) - Sadly, I haven't finish this one yet. I assure you its not because its bad. Its because when I'm trying to watch this back then, the show I've been waiting for suddenly got released so I hyperfocus in only one show and forgot the other titles lol Just like what happened to me recently with Blood River and Sword & Beloved, I only manage to finish Blood River. Anyway, Cheng Yi's Li Lianhua is not a fave instantly because I feel he's a twin or relative of Li Hongyi's Xiao Se. I warm up to him later on since Cheng Yi took the fighting choreography very seriously into another level and I appreciate that effort. Will definitely finish this one day.
Gong Jun's Su Muyu (Blood River) - Su Muyu is my favorite character ever since Shao Ge because he's a good person and cool assassin. But I already had problem with his Anhe Zhuan donghua version's design and Gong Jun being casted to the role just made it worse because I don't like Gong Jun's Dongfang Yuechu in Fox Spirit Matchmaker drama even though I like his WOH Wen Kexing. Both of it are my favorite characters so I have this ideal and high expectations. I also think WOH WKX work well because he's expressive most of the time with only few wooden face moments as Ghost Valley master. When it comes to Su Muyu, he's most of the time wooden face with rare expressive moments. This type of role is hard and multifaceted so I can't blame GJ if he's having trouble grasping the role. What's funny is if Anhe Zhuan is a parallel universe and this is a different Su Muyu, why GJ lean to TBOY Su Muyu as reference? Is it because his dad is the TBOY Su Muyu actor? Because Anhe Zhuan donghua's Su Muyu is more emotional and expressive than him or any other version. Why he mixed the two versions? But that's exactly why I came to accept his Su Muyu. Because it does feel like a mix of different Su Muyu so it feel connected to TBOY still. He's respecting the legacy of previous actor for the role.

Zhang Zhehan's Zhou Zishu (Word of Honor) - Unlike most watchers, I find it easy to like Zhou Zishu at first than Wen Kexing. Maybe because I'm paying attention to the story from beginning? I'm happy they didn't erase all of his crimes because I'm done with cdrama adaption watering down characters with questionable morals too much. Sure, they toned down his character but not erasing his crime is a good sign. People might don't like his Zhou Zishu because its not like TYK Zhou Zishu. You're right but also no. Because the emotional side of WOH Zhou Zishu is obviously inspired from the QY Zhou Zishu where he was devastated about Jiuxiao's death or him being sad when Jiuxiao hated him because man massacred a family. I can still see some shadow of book Zhou Zishu in his portrayal. He also don't stand out because TYK Zhou Zishu has an NPC energy lol which I love. I only want him to stand out from Wen Kexing's and Chengling's perspective anyway.
Hu Yitan's Hua Wuque (Handsome Siblings) - The Taiwanese drama version of this story is my childhood. I watched this because I'm waiting for FHLJ and I want to watch what Chen Zheyuan can offer as an actor. His Jiang Xiaoyu was good but its also not hard to like Hu Yitan's Hua Wuque. He reminds me of my ideal Lan Wangji from the book. He was polite and a good child who didn't know he was tasked to kill Jiang Xiaoyu his actual long lost sibling. You will find yourself asking for Jiang siblings only scenes than their romance.
