Which village is near Umling La?

The nearest inhabited village to the Umling La pass is Demchok, located just a few kilometers from the India-China border. However, because it sits directly on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), tourists primarily use the larger village of Hanle (approx. 105 km away) as their main basecamp. 

Key Villages Near Umling La 

Demchok: The closest settlement to the pass, located on the banks of the Indus River. It is a historically significant village right on the India-China border, but access is strictly regulated and facilities for travelers are essentially nonexistent. 

Hanle: The most practical and preferred village to stay at before making the summit. Situated roughly 105 km from Umling La, Hanle offers basic homestays run by locals and is famous for the Hanle Observatory. 

Chisumle & Koyul: These are two other remote, high-altitude villages along the route that stretches through the Changthang region of Ladakh. Chisumle bridge to Umling la distance is around  20 to 25 kilometers.

Travel & Stay Tips

Because Umling La sits at an extreme elevation of 19,024 feet, the region is highly prone to harsh winds and freezing temperatures. If you are planning a visit, you will need to acclimate well and arrange Inner Line Permits prior to your journey. For a safe and comfortable stay, book a local homestay in Hanle in advance, as it is the only nearby settlement with basic amenities like beds and hot water.
