I’m sorry I can’t remember who I saw raise this point initially, because this was not my thought, I wish I was that clever, but THE FALL WAS A METAPHOR!!!

Like of course they didn’t actually fall. When we look over the cliff there is no evidence of blood or bodies. And they would not have survived the fall, they aren’t Chilton, and we know they survive because there is a table setting for both of them with Bedelia.
We see visual metaphors all the time in this show. Like the stag. We see hallucinations, dreams, imaginings. It would make complete sense that this fall is another one of those moments. To me it is a metaphor for their surrender to each other. Their falling in love (be it romantic, spiritual, intellectual, all of the above). Their choice of being together in death, in a world of death, than separate in life. Surrender.
