i know, right?? it kills me. honestly, a lot of things about that game still make me laugh. that game, paper mario 64, ttyd, superstar saga, bowser’s inside story, dream team... the mario rpgs have so much to love. smrpg really started it all and put such a huge foundation on the characters we love today. it’s the first game to give bowser the personality we all know him to have, the first game to give peach more spotlight and personality than just being a damsel-in-distress, the first game to show mario in an rpg setting and emoting appropriately (and the pantomiming omg), the first game to give us unique and lovable rpg deuteragonists (geno and mallow), the first game to give us a star as an actual character beyond a power-up or object (geno!!!), the first game to give mario a deeper story... and so on.
people nowadays love to downplay how important smrpg was to the history of the mario series (mostly people who are anti-geno). i get geno not being a big influence (although i’d argue he heavily inspired future star characters like the star spirits of star haven, the millennium star, starlow, and heck, maybe even the lumas to a small extent), but smrpg itself is a classic. this is the game that outsold freaking chrono trigger, a game that is rightfully regarded as a legendary title. it gave us so much that is still recurring in the mario series today, shaping it up to what it is now. my love for smrpg and the mario rpgs in general runs so deep. it has a lot of sentimental value beyond appreciating the games themselves, too, given my grandpa introduced me to my first mario rpg (paper mario 64). it has that special meaning to it all.
needless to say, all of this heavily played into why i grew attached to geno. he feels like taking a trip back to my childhood when i wished on stars and saw the magic in everything. being able to portray a protector and representative of those childhood things in my adulthood makes me so happy. i love smrpg. i love geno. i am just... a creacher full of love.
