Ok so the song Good Girls (Dont get Used) by Beach Bunny gives Matt

Lemme break it down

" Stop saying 'its my bad' your acting like your deadbeat dad, i know you know your better than that but you can't respond when you react"

Matt has a deadbeat dad, he def says "my bad" all the time to avoid accountability but still apologize, said deadbeat dad probably does the same thing, Gus knows Matt is better than aforementioned dad, Matt tends to react first think later

"I'm tired of dumb boy talk, of getting close, you say you won't, you do, then act as though you don't, you're not a ghost, I'm not afraid of you"

Matt def talks about dumb shit to change the subject when he's uncomfortable, he totally says he won't do something then does said thing then goes "oops" and pretends it never happened, Matt tries to be better than everyone out of habit and as a coping mechanism and Gus is not afraid of him

Gus starts letting go of Matt like giving him space, Matt lets him know he's just confused about the whole friendship situation, Matt still thinks Gus is cute however he's scared of getting used again

Matts parents suck (maybe im projecting so what) like they never actually hit him but yk gambling addictions, mom always drunk, dad doesn't really give a shit about him

Matt has a really poor family, they live in the bad part of town really dirty run down apartment

Steve moved out with the emperor's coven and never looked back once, Matt still holds some bitterness towards him about this, like he always looked up too Steve but he's bitter that he left him alone in that trash household

Ok so Steve would have gotten him out if possible but Steve was 16 when he left and Matt was 6

Like Steve still visited and called Matt all the time to check up on him and make sure if he's ok but he would only ever visit when their parents weren't there

I think Matt had an ED for a bit, probably already ate very little due to his family being poor but then Bria and others enforced it and made things worse to where it developed into an ED

I think both Matt and Gus got SA'd

Matt by Bria (i might delve into this more in a diff post) and Gus by Adrian Grey listen that man was seriously predatory but its 12am and i don't have time to discuss that rn

Matt covers his face when he laughs, not cause he's insecure of the sound but more so insecure about how he looks while laughing (lets just assume for most of this im projecting ok)

Gus hates that he thinks Matt's laugh is cute, he likes objectively knows Matt's laugh is weird and unpleasant but he sadly thinks its adorable

Gus has the most god awful taste, in both men and women, just horrid judgement -crush on Bria then dating Matt

Both of them are horribly insecure but in different ways

Matt usually doesn't laugh really big he usually just sneers and laughs really smug so the first time he actually laughed for real was when Gus fell for him, literally as he realized this he was thinking to himself "what the hell is wrong with me why is he cute"

Matt fell first, he liked Gus ever since the looking glass graveyard it was like a slow decent into realizing "oh fuck he's pretty"

Gus fell harder, it was a random day like 3 years after the defeat of belos and it just hit him like a truck when Matt laughed at something stupid

Both of them pined for YEARS Matt for like 6 years and Gus for 2 years

I think they don't actually even get together till Gus is 18 and Matt is 19, neither of them were really emotionally ready for a relationship nor were they mature enough to maintain one healthily till then

Matt is such a heavy overworking like he works himself into the dirt its really bad

Gus is a severe over achiever, he will sob his eyes out if his essay is one sentence too short

Matt never went to college he got a job in construction as soon as he turned 16 and he just worked a bunch of illegal odd jobs before then while still in school

Matt attempted moving out of his house earlier but he was still broke so it didn't happen till he was 18, and even then it was because he was kinda kicked out. Like he finally started to fight back against his parents and they were like "if your gonna act like that you can leave" and he was like "fine im sick of your ass anyways" so he left. However he was still broke. Gus was walking by at the time and witnessed part of this so he let Matt live with him and Perry for a while.

Matt lived with Gus and Perry for like 3 months but he felt really bad about leaching off them so after that he moved in with Steve for a while till he could afford an apartment

For a while Matt hated Gus because of how "perfect" he was, because he tried so hard to be that good and Gus just seemed to do it effortlessly and everyone liked him and Gus was also super nice to him too. The jealousy eventually turned to love and obsession after TLGR. Think the song Lacy by Olivia Rodrigo

Matt and Amity are unironically friends

Matt when he was younger after Steve left used to call him a lot more than Steve would call Matt.

Matt is a lot like his parents and he despises it, he says he's nothing like them but he definitely is. His dad was really distant and not all there and Matt acts really distant and ignores people when he's upset. His mom was an alcoholic and yelled a lot and was super manipulative and she threw things when upset. Matt tends to lash out and yell at people when upset and he will trash whatever room he goes to calm down in

Matt totally has a bunch of unresolved anger and it shows up constantly

Matts parents never physically hurt him or Steve but they would threaten them and their mom would punch doors and walls

Steve was the one who mostly argued back against their parents so he was treated worse than Matt for a while

Steve feels really bad about leaving because he knows his parents haven't changed and Matt is probably struggling but he's also super glad he made it out

Matt got blamed a lot for stuff Steve did, it was always contradictory, "why can't you be more successful like Steve" "Why are you being such a brat you're worse than Steve" "you don't want to end up like Steve" and none of it made any sense

Gus in the beginning before TLGR really wanted to like Matt and wanted to think he was secretly a good person but Matt took one of the things he prided himself on (the HAS) so it was very difficult to try and see past that, occasionally thought Matt was pretty until he opened his mouth.

Knew Matt was unsure of himself and sometimes he seemed afraid of something but then Matt opened his fat mouth and said something rude and stupid (all before TLGR) Gus often got pissed at him because Matt would tell him to listen and then didn't have anything to say - think Too Close by Sir Chloe

Matt in general feels like the song Boys Will Be Bugs by Cavetown

Matt definitely decided to be extra mean at 14 (he already knew Gus then) and besides Gus his only friends are bugs, he def punches walls, def decides to ignore messages on purpose sometimes and stays out late, he is a dumb teen boy and he probably wants to quit a lot of the time, also has trouble crying because of time at Glandus, and he does think he knows everything
