Summary of “A Day Off”
summarized by : Arshiee Porras
The story is about a married couple, Zale and Abdu, whose relationship has lost some spark and romance. Abdu has taken Zale for granted after his work thinking that her role is only to serve him food and nothing more. Zale was unable to show her fondness to her husband, as she knows that “he was dead to the world that he need a shave.” One day Zale took a day off. While she is in the train, she read an article. Women, the article said, had only themselves to blame. “That was why a wife ought to take a day off every now and then: do what she wanted to do and see what she wanted to see. The experience would be beneficial to her and to her family,” as she sighed and put the paper down after reading it. The thing is that she had no idea what she want to do and what to see at some point.
After she reached her destination, at the entrance she met an elderly man name Richard or Dick. They got to the point that they were deeply talking about each other’s life. Zale shared her problem about her husband taking her for granted. “Well, you never can be sure about husbands until you confront them with the fact, can you?” as Zale remembered the article she read earlier. As their conversation goes on, Zale suddenly, remember that she needs to go home. Zale was enlightened about of what have Richard said to her she remembered and encourage by Richards words: “You never be sure about husbands until “you confront them with the fact.” As she reached her house, she saw Abdu not eating the food she prepared for him before leaving the house earlier. Zale ask him why he did not eat the food. Instead, she was surprised by Abdu’s respond to her, ”Oh, the with, Zale, who wants to eat alone?” She smiled herself, feeling suddenly older and wiser wanted to do and what she had not had the courage to do before, and now she had confirmed a fundamental truth about husbands. Abdu was glad for Zale has returned home as he felt something is missing while Zale was gone. Zale turned away to hide the new secret knowledge in her eyes.
Yaaaaas long weekend bui, no duty twing' sat & sun tapos absent muna sa tuesday, inuman na itu!!!
I was bothered lately. I tell her the truth na may problem between us kasi I can’t look at her directly, and I’m scared na baka hindi ko siya matignan ng maayos bukas, and I can’t hate her. She was shocked kasi first time ko mag-open sa kanya ng hinanakit ko from her. My hormones right now is not normal. That’s why I have balls to tell her what’s bothering me between us.
After we fixed it, she confronted that I look like a drunk kid nowadays in our room. Sobrang happy ko daw kasi, I laugh on small things. When I think of something, di ko na nafifilter and nasasabi ko agad sa kanila even tho sobrang sabaw ng naiisip ko. I notice everything in our room, and laugh my ass of about it. First time nila akong makitang ganon, and I’m being honest about it. They know me na tihimik lang lagi and malalim mag-isip sa aming magtrotropa. Feeling ko first time ko nadiscover how fun to be with them kasi nakulong ako sa relasyon ko dati na nagawa kong baliwalain sila. It feels good to be jolly kasi nagiging prositive thoughts ko about sa lahat, kasi they’re really fun to be with. It was neutral for me na malaman ang news na to from my best friend kasi I’m really happy talaga pag asa school ako at the same time ayaw ko ng center of fun because I’m really sensitive sa jokes. I can pretend I don’t care at the moment. In the end of the day I’ll cry about how pathetic I am.
Anyways I shouldn’t overthink about it, she said.
I think yung new friends ko ngayon, mas nakikilala ko na. Mas nagkaroon kami ng time para mag-usap about things na dati hindi namin maopen sa isa't isa.
Next namin pupuntahan, Tagaytay. Pero bago yun, pupunta muna akong school bukas. Heheh 😂
