My friend just texted me...

It turns out that his long time friend is in (yet another) bad situation. His ex is taking advantage of him, and he's trying to explain it by saying that he is "hardwired to be loyal" to his partners.

Dude. Buddy. Listen to me, my neighbor:

Nobody is hardwired to be loyal to anything.

That's part of why loyalty is valuable, it's a choice. It's always a choice, which, like consent, has to be enthusiastic and ongoing in order to work.

This is a guy who does not want to unpack why he lets people keep taking advantage of him. He doesn't want to believe that he is choosing this, so he's laying it at the feet of being "hardwired."
