“Bau sei horlan dau!” “Yau mou gau chor argh?” as different from “Yau mou kau choi argh?” Which my Cantonese language teacher Uncle Charles assures me is legit. I wouldn’t trust Uncle Charles as far as I can throw him so I had to defer to Aunty Janet to explain and her answer nearly made me choke on my Baloney Sandwich. Uncle Charles had his namesake The Geezer Sandwich (in a fresh brioche bun). He was marvelling at the 10 layers of ham that nestled between the bun. Aunty Janet went all traditional and had the ham & poached eggs with side salad and toast. We all shared a side of the best cooked crunchy chips (agria) with tomato sauce and aioli. Uncle Charles is home alone. Aunty Janet has gone to a Buddhist retreat in the Coromandel. I picked up Uncle Charles after his gym workout. I’m sure he was wearing his Captain Marvel tee during his exercise. Anyway, I had to take him to Hare & The Turtle in New Windsor, Avondale near their current home as come July, they are moving to their new house in Henderson. They are the new Westies. We both chose a house-made brioche bun sandwich that best described ourselves; GEEZER for Uncle Charles, GOBBLER for my good self (of course). GEEZER: Freedom Farms ham, housemade piccalilli, Swiss cheese, mayo & cos lettuce all in a brioche bun. GOBBLER: free-range sliced turkey, cranberry, smoked cheddar & slaw. Loving the fresh house-baked brioche buns used for most of the sandwiches at Hare and the Turtle, New Windsor. Uncle has been yearning for the Geezer (ham) or Gobbler (turkey) as he tossed and turned sleepless overnight from his man-cold. So he dragged his sorry arse over to Avondale to have the Geezer: a delicious stack of Freedom Farm ham, house-made piccalilli, Swiss cheese, mayo & cos lettuce. Reminiscent of the ham sandwiches at the cafe that used to seduce us last century at Auckland War Memorial Museum. Hare and the Turtle is a gem of a cafe in the corner of a t-junction in Avondale. Owner Leaf Elder @hareandtheturtle knows everyone who walks through her door. If she doesn’t she and her staff make it a point to get to know you. It’s always a pleasure to re-visit. Uncle and Aunties have been working through Hare and the Turtle’s menu. We just love the fresh house-baked brioche buns used for most of the sandwiches. The Geezer: a delicious stack of Freedom Farm ham, house-made piccalilli, Swiss cheese, mayo & cos lettuce. Reminiscent of the ham sandwiches at the cafe that used to seduce us last century at Auckland War Memorial Museum. The Gobbler: Uncle’s favourite, free-range sliced turkey, cranberry, smoked cheddar and slaw. Daisy: Slow-cooked beef, melted Edam, pickled onion, burger sauce, horseradish & mustard, served toasted with organic white sourdough. For good measure, one of Uncle’s friends who has hollow legs had the cinnamon bun, and then a doughnut filled with cream. He enjoyed them immensely, and licked all the cream that oozed out of the doughnut onto his fingers.
