I just want to tell you all about Hari-Kuyo

In the long string of divine coincidences that make up my life, here's this little anecdote: I bought that dictionary of untranslatable words because I learned the word "kugen" (an awareness and awe of the universe that leads to emotions too deep and mysterious feelings that you can't put into words). It came in yesterday, and I'm going through it, highlighting and annotating (as one does on a Saturday night), and I came across Hari-Kuyo, which the editor described as "a shrine to broken needles". I loved it, because it really meant "to honor the work of the past year and to commit oneself to improving in the next". Today, I had a meeting with my museum design group and we are planning an exhibit called The Needle's Spirit, which explores embroidery in non-western cultures. Halfway through the meeting, I remembered this and looked it up to tell them more about it. Turns out, it's less of a shrine and more of a festival that Japanese women celebrate each year. Guess what day it's celebrated on. Actually don't guess, I'm going to tell you- February 8th. My heart is so full right now. I'm examining the work I've done in this past year and honoring my growth as an artist and a stitcher and a manipulator of fabrics and looking forward to pushing and improving myself. Because if I can come this far, I can go so much farther. Does anyone have stories about work you're proud of that you've done this year? Please share them with me!

*  Parinirvana - Nirvana Day (Mahayana Buddhism)

*   Hari-kuyo, Festival of Broken Needles, Needle Mass Day (Japan) A day for girls to gather old and broken needles to dedicate them to the deity Awashi Myozin, no needlework is to be done this day. (I have to wonder just how much is done these days anyway.) 

*   Kite Flying Day (Korea)
