“You there! Stop!” One of the guards came up to me, one hand on her sword handle, the other one pointing at me.
I stopped. That went well. I wasn’t even in the city yet …
“Is there a problem?”, I asked. Somehow, there always was. From time to time I was wondering if that sort of thing happend to other people too.
“Depends.” She raised her eyebrow looking at the sword on my side. “That’s a big sword. What’s your business here?”
“Why do you ask?”
“Because you look like trouble, solider.” She pointed at the ring I was wearing around my neck. “We don’t get a lot of imperial soldiers coming through and when we do, they mostly behave badly.”
“Well, good thing I’m not a soldier anymore. That thing is just a souvenir” I tried to walk on, but she stopped me.
“What are you doing here? The brethren court doesn’t like Imperials in their city.”
“Relax.” I raised my hands. “I’m only looking for my brothers, okay? I don’t want any trouble.”
Which was a lie, but she didn’t have to know that. This was getting more and more ridiculous anyway. Was it too much to just get into this damned city?
“Fine.” She stepped aside, giving me one last sharp look. “But I’m warning you, we’ll have our eyes on you.”
I winked at her. “I bet you will.”
