Character death and spoilers for the manga.

Disappointment. Shalnark felt nothing but complete and utter disappointment at the moment of his death. Although not entirely welcome, death was a part of life he’d long come to expect. Years of sleeping with one eye open had braced him for the possibility. So he was not surprised when the death bringer had eventually come for him, nor was he disappointed in his own death. Lacking his abilities, Shall put up a reasonable fight. Given the current circumstances and gauging his own ability against Hisoka’s, he figured he only had less than 10% chance of victory to begin with.

What weighed heavily on Shalnark mind, at that moment was the future of the Troupe. He blamed himself entirely for Kortopi’s death and prayed for Machi’s safety. It was one thing to accept your own mortality but he never wanted anyone else to have to pay for his mistakes. He knew they shouldn’t have been out here, alone, unarmed and unaware. He should have been more careful. No one could have known Hisoka would cheat his own death, but he should have known there would still be risks. He was disappointed in himself, for failing to protect the spider. It was his job to analyze the situation, to choose the route with the least risks and keep his comrades safe. Posed lifeless on a swing, forced to stare indefinitely at the severed head of his friend, the unfamiliar weight of regret rests heavily on his conscious.

            When you get used about having your body almost ripped apart several times, being put and putting people you consider dear in danger, when you feel helplessly weak thanks to the enemy in sight and you are uncapable of running, fighting back or even thinking properly... you get used with this so called concept of fear and death. You lose your sanity and humanity. That’s what most of people would think, at least. But looking back to his story, it only forced the silver-haired teen to become stronger in a short amount of time. It gave him courage, power, strength, true friends: if every memory was put on a balance, he gained more than he lost.                                       He finally broke his curse.

             So when you stop to think about it, maybe it was one of the reasons of why he didn’t feel scared or intimidated by Hisoka anymore. Months ago, he’d certainly already have a scape plan in mind and stay on his guard for the entire time, however, instead, his feet were steady and a peaceful breathing could be heard. 

             ‘ if you’re looking for gon to satisfy your perverted wishes, he isn’t with me. ’
