She looked over to him, her lip worrying between her teeth and she rolled onto her side, facing him. Her eyes were wide as her gaze scanned his face. Then she edged closer. He could see how nervous she was, how scared too. Her nostrils were flaring a little where she was breathing heavily. He extracted a hand from the covers, the same hand that was marked by his blood oath. His attention fell on the strand of hair that he noticed earlier that was still trailing over her face. He caught the strand with his fingers and tucked it behind her ear. His gaze ran down the line of her jaw and then he felt it. The longing to touch her.

“You weren’t supposed to leave.”

The words are soft and accusing, managing to pull her from her thoughts automatically. She looks up and sees Harry standing in the doorway of the waiting area. She wipes her face, hating herself for being so bloody emotional and such a cry baby. Before she can say anything, Harry steps closer.

“You were supposed to yell at me and hit me,” he says quietly as he pushes up his glasses in a familiar gesture that makes her sigh. “And then you were supposed to force me to talk to you because that’s what you do. You’re not supposed to leave.”

She shivered. “You shouldn’t say that.”

Harry leaned down, his lips brushing her ear. “I love you.” He pressed his cold mouth to the side of her neck, and she felt him smile. “I’ll tell you that I might be the last person to deserve you, but I love you. And if the tent is all you ever give me, I will still love you.”

For the first time in her entire friendship with Harry she was seeing him through a lens that felt foreign. He wasn't just her best friend. He was suddenly a man, and one that she was allowing herself to feel attraction for. If they were going to do this—this shagging without feelings thing he proposed-they needed rules.

She wasn't willing to risk losing her best friend over something as stupid as sex. No, that would be inadvisable.

She studied him as he slept, noticing that his glasses had slipped to be slightly crooked. His hair was its usual mess, making her want to comb her fingers through it. She studied him and for once, maybe because the knowledge that he'd carried her up to her room was still warming her heart or maybe simply because he was safely asleep and she didn't need to fear that her expression would reveal her thoughts, she didn't even try to deny her own reaction to looking at him. Didn't try not to acknowledge the way her heart fluttered, her breath became a little shallow, her skin heated. She didn't even try to deny that she wanted to kiss him, that she just wanted him…

He stirred and then blinked his eyes a few times before his gaze focused and met hers.

“Come on,” he said, taking Hermione by the arm to try and move her apart from her scrutiny, but Hermione tripped at the tug of his hand, and fell into him. He felt her hand flutter at his side, before grasping tight to his blazer. He caught her elbow, laughing, and steadying her.

“Careful,” he said. “You’re going to take me down now.”

Her eyes had grown quite wide, and the strand of her hair had fallen into her face again. Harry thought, as if removed from himself, of pushing the hair back again. It was an odd thought, and for a moment he couldn’t sort where it had come from.

She made a coughing sound, and tugged on his blazer to regain her balance. Harry straightened, setting her back on her feet.

“We could go together,” he said, suddenly. He felt quite foolish for not thinking of it sooner.

“What?” Hermione said, tucking that strand behind her ear. Harry watched the path of her fingers.
