Jazz torchbearer Kamasi Washington released his second album, Harmony of Difference, on September 29 th of this year, following his tour de force debut 2015 LP, The Epic. Two years later, Washington is still revolutionizing the jazz era with his progressive and spiritual takes on the genre. Only 6 tracks long yet jam-packed with Washington’s tireless soul, Harmony of Difference includes Desire, Humility, Knowledge, Perspective, Integrity, and Truth which blend together in a seamless ensemble. His maximalist, cathartic sound is layered with detail and impeccable arrangement, however remains oddly accessible to audiences.
The track titles represent what may be considered Washington’s greatest values at hand, especially regarding the social issues tormenting the world today. The arc of his music focuses on memory, perspective and association. The very title of the album highlights his passion for celebrating difference. His melodious work is the undertone for a strained social climate we are in right now. Harmony of Difference is an excellent follow up to its predecessor The Epic with its eruption of raw emotion making us as listeners feel connected to Washington’s opinions.
