Obsessing over the musical Alice by Heart lately and analyzing the characters. The Mad Tea Party is a heart breaking scene as it is, but today it hit me that even though Alfred, as the White Rabbit, tells Alice that FINE he's going to be the March Hare for this! it's to keep the plot moving, but there are several points during the show where we see the (sometimes literal) bleed between realities have the real world counterparts affecting their Wonderland counterparts. And at the trial the residents outright complain to the queen about how Alice has been ruining the story. And in Do You Think We Think You're Alice? they even snap at her for thinking they only exist when she decides visit. The characters are just as real as their human counterparts.

And Hatter and Dormouse even seem to acknowledge that Rabbit isn't actually the same as Hare because he opens up the Tea Party scene by telling them "Did you hear what she did to poor Mary Anne?" / "Oh, poor Mary Anne!" which of course Hare would know nothing about, this is just Rabbit taking over Alfred for a moment from wanting to vent about his scene being screwed up and the other two are fascinated to hear. We see Harold take over when Hatter grows very serious in giving Alice a bit of a reality check before all three turn outright antagonistic towards her in Sick to Death. She's not just screwing up scenes, she may be having an affect on the characters themselves. The tea trio have always been a bit rude and blunt with Alice across versions, but these three all agree to completely drop the narrative and tell Alice they don't want to be in this version of the story. THIS Alice is dangerous and there are questions about why she came to Wonderland and not just letting Alfred go, but letting them all go when they've determined they don't want to be in her head anymore.

But why should Hatter and Dormouse be so angry when technically they're only just now meeting her? Possibly because not only are they aware, but something vital has changed in their story whether she intended it or not. ....What happened to the the March Hare that the other two seem more than open to letting Rabbit fill in? Harold may be leaking through but it's possible his ties to Hatter has the duo still trying to make sense of what happened to their friend.

"I had a really good buddy and he was drop dead funny. Then one day he just... dropped dead. Isn't that funny?"

oh my gosh. the paper hat the mad hatter wears in alice by heart is made of actual war newspapers.

it’s a bit hard to read, but if you look closely you can clearly make out “bombs dropped”, and i can see the words “police” and “hunt for parachutists” too.

“RAID LONDON IN TOWNS”. if this isn’t about the blitz i don’t know what is.

the most right corner literally says “HITLER IS STILL THINKING”. there’s something about axis too, which is germany, italy and japan who initiated ww2 and fought against the allied powers.

i am unwell. he is wearing a hat made out of newspapers describing the war his alter ego fought in and, mind you, lost his sanity in.

would anyone be interested in how i would style the alice by hearts characters + how it contributes to the war and coming of age plot

I got reminded that I never posted about who / what I think the abh mock turtles are mourning,, ( which really means what the underground cast is mourning )

my ideas below the cut 💙

( disclaimer I haven’t read the book in a bit , some things may be wrong )

Harold turtle - quite obviously , Freddie , or his husband if you haven’t read the book

Butridge turtle - his grandfather , I like to think he was always really close with his family growing up , especially his grandfather. He died when he was young and was his first encounter with death

Tabatha turtle - I fear it might be very obvious , her sister , she’s never fully gotten over the grief , just forced herself to move past it

Dodgy turtle - His rabbi , I mean he pretty much explicitly says what happens. I do think his rabbi was a close family friend , he possibly knew him all his life

Clarissa turtle - Her aunt Beesly ( Breesly ?) , she doesn’t like to acknowledge it but her aunt died last year , she copes by still believing she’ll be around to host her next birthday party

Nigel turtle - His mom , of course , and his multiple brothers ( who I believe were also said to die in a raid in the book ? ) , his brothers he’s accepted at least a little bit , his mom not so much

Nurse ( Agatha to me ) turtle - Her childhood , I think she had to grow up fast , be so proper when she was only so young , she had no time for fun things

Angus turtle - I don’t think about that man either to have an idea of what he could be mourning , I don’t really see anything he could mourn other than his nonexistent pilot career

Lily ( female ensemble member ) turtle - Harold before the war , he’s her older brother ( by a year ) , he came back so different , it’s hard to remain normal looking into his dead eyes

Louis ( male ensemble member ) turtle - A friend who died in battle , he still wears that friend’s coat
