Second Opinion - Chapter Two

summary: summary: when you transfer over to county, you meet the most attractive man you've ever seen. the only problem? he's a prick, oh and your best friend is his boss.

chapter two

You were exhausted as you traipse into the diner with Jeanie, you were practically dead on your feet. Blood stained your sleeve and you could still hear the incessant beeping of the machines ringing in your ears.

“What would you like?” Jeanie asked, she looked as exhausted as you did.

“Uh,” you blink as you stare at the menu in front of you, the words swimming together, “the greasiest burger you can get,” you laugh.

“Make that two, please,” Jeanie says to the guy behind the counter and the both of you grab a booth.

Jeanie grins at you, the kind of smile that looked like she was keeping a secret, “what?” you ask as you sip your soda.

“You have a secret admirer, well, not so secret I guess.”

“What? Who?” you thank the waitress as she brings your orders to the table, though you were a bit worried about the freshness of the burger based on how quickly it had arrived. Hopefully it didn’t make you sick.

“Carter.”

You choke slightly at her words, “Carter?” you scoff, “come on Jeanie, he hates me.”

“Looks that way from the outside but you should have heard the way he was talking about you to Harper.”

“The pretty blonde one with all the ear piercings?” you hum when Jeanie nods, “what was he saying?”

“That you were the best.”

“Huh.”

“Hey, Pip,” you nod at Peter as he sits down, smacking his arm when he steals one of your fries.

“Who’s Pip?” Jeanie asks, making you groan.

“It’s an old nickname, did you tell Doug Ross about that by the way?” you huff as Peter shrugs a shoulder.

“That’s cute!” Jeanie grins, “Peter, I was telling Pip about Carter’s crush on her.”

Peter pulled a face and said a word that your mom would have scolded him for, “yeah well I told him and Ross that you were off limits.”

“Ugh, Peter,” you roll your eyes.

“Wow, you’d think they’d get a room,” Jeanie nods over your shoulder.

You look over your shoulder to see Carter and Harper in a very passionate lip lock, “looks like he’s trying to feel her tonsils,” you snicker.

Almost as if he’d heard you, Carter pulled away from the girl, looking over at you as he wiped the red smear off his lips with one hand. With his free hand on the small of Harper’s back, they made their way over to the table, much to your annoyance.

“Good evening everybody,” he smirks as he picks up and takes a huge bite from it, wiping the ketchup from his fingers.

“Hey!” you yelp as you snatch the burger back from him, “can everyone stop stealing my food, you’re all so gross.”

You had barely taken a bite of the burger yourself when you felt your pager go off and you groaned through a mouthful of food. You’d just finished a shift.

“I gotta go. Carter, you’re with me.”

“What?” he groaned, “why?”

“Because,” you start as you slurp the rest of your soda, “thanks to Peter, you’re on my service. If I’m needed, then so are you.”

He huffs like a child as he pressed a kiss to Harper’s mouth, “in my humble opinion, you could do better,” you whisper to her.

She laughs while Carter glares at you, “yeah, well I don’t recall anyone asking you.”

As you and Carter run into the hospital, an EMT wheels in a screaming little girl, “what have we got?”

“Four-year-old passenger in a car accident, laceration across her forehead, no other sign of injuries. Driver’s following in critical condition.”

“Where’s Ross?” you ask Carole who’s already getting the suture kit for you.

“He’s looking after the kid with HIV, won’t leave his side. It’s why you were paged for this one.”

You nod, trying to calm the screaming child, “Carter, go get Greene in case we need back up.”

“What? No! We can handle this.”

“As much as I love watching you two fight like an old married couple,” Carole’s words made Carter scoff, “but do you really think now is the best time for this?” she had a point.

“Ugh, fine,” you mumble as you get the girl into one of the trauma bays, Carter at your heels like a lost puppy.

“Should we sedate her?”

“No, wait, let me try something first,” you didn’t want to sedate a kid unless it was absolutely necessary, “it’s alright, sweetheart,” you stroke her hair back as you sit on the bed as you gather her onto your lap, gently tightening your hold, rocking her gently. Slowly but surely, her little sobs quietened until they were mere hiccups.

“There you go, that’s better huh?”

“Nice one,” Carter breathed, nearly giving you a heart attack from the praise. He smiled softly as he waved at the little girl, “what’s your name sweetheart?” she didn’t answer, just kept staring at him, she must have been in so much shock, the poor little thing, “well, I’m John and that’s Dr Pip.”

You glare at him, “how did you find out about that name?”

“I never reveal my sources, is Pip short for pipsqueak or something?”

“Shut up, Carter.”

He laughed, not a scoffing laugh or a mean laugh, no, it was an actual laugh, “she’ll need some stitches,” he ran a gentle thumb against the cut on her forehead and she didn’t even flinch.

“Would you mind? I don’t think she’ll let me let her go.”

“Sure, sure, you let me do all the work while you sit there and look pretty.”

“Oh fuc- wait, you think I’m pretty?”

Carter sighs as he glares at you, “it’s just a saying but if you must know, I hate you but I’m not blind.”

Before Carter could even start with the stitches, Benton was at his back with a man on a gurney, “Carter, are you scrubbing in for surgery?”

Carter glances over his shoulder, as much as you needed his help, this was a teaching hospital and you couldn’t tear him away from a possible learning opportunity.

“Go ahead, Carter. I’ll manage.”

Without looking at you, he spoke directly to Peter, “thanks for the offer but uh, I’m needed here Dr Benton.”

You share a surprised look with Peter who shrugs a shoulder, “suit yourself.”

“You didn’t have to do that, but I appreciate it.”

He scoffs as he frowns and begins to work, “I didn’t do it for you.”

“Yeah, no, I know that.”

While Carter stitches, the little girl can’t take her eyes off of him, she’s just watching him with wide blue eyes, “she can’t take her eyes off you.”

“Can’t blame her, not with my good looks.”

“Hilarious, she probably thinks you look funny.”

“You’re a pain in my ass, Doc,” the girl gasps at his cursing and he covers his mouth in an over the top way, “whoops, sorry!” she giggles at the funny look on his face.

“At least a four-year-old finds you funny, congrats Carter.”

“Yeah because I’m hilarious,” he grins as he sits back.

A woman outside the bay window catches your attention and you recognise her instantly as the hospital social worker, “I should go speak to her,” you nod at her.

“Oh, uh. I could do it.”

“No, they’ll need to speak to me, I’m the resident,” you sigh as you hand him the little girl, who settles on his lap quite happily.

“Right,” you didn’t miss the venom in his voice.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Its fine,” he grumbles, it clearly wasn’t fine.

You shake your head as you step out.

“Turns out the driver is her father, there’s a number in his wallet for some family in California. I hear he’s in critical condition.”

“Yeah, he’s still in surgery.”

“Well, hopefully he makes it through so little Lyla doesn’t have to up and move to California,” you look through the window to see Lyla playing with Carter’s stethoscope as he entertains her.

Hours later, Greene came to find you to tell you that Lyla’s dad had crashed and died in the middle of surgery. When Carter told her she cried her little heart out. She just cried and cried until she wore herself out. Carter hadn’t left her bedside.

“You know what I’m really craving right now?”

“What?” he mumbles.

“Some ice cream.”

“Ice cream?” he scoffs.

“Yeah! They keep a spare stash for the cafeteria in a freezer in one of the supply closets. Want some?”

Carter sighs as he rubs the side of his nose, “yeah, sure.”

You weaved through the busy ER to get to the supply closet and you tried the doorknob. It was jammed as usual but it wouldn’t stand in the way of you getting your ice cream. When you force the door open, it immediately becomes clear on why the door was jammed and it was for a very good reason.

Ross and Harper were in the throes of passion against the wall. They gasp as they pull away from each other and you cover your eyes.

“Oh fuck! Don’t mind me, just gonna get some ice cream,” you shuffle over to the fridge and grab the first two flavours that you could find.

You ignore their calls of your name, that is until Harper catches up with you and grabs your shoulder when you’re halfway down the corridor.

“Wait, listen. You won’t tell John will you?”

“Harper, what you do in your spare time is really none of my business,” you turn back around but before you could get much further, you sigh and turned to face her again, “but I’ve seen how Carter is with you and if you’re not serious about him, then you need to tell him. I don’t want a mopey med student.”

When she nods, you walk back down to the trauma bay, “right, chocolate or caramel?”

“Caramel, thanks,” he nods as you hand it to him.

“You hate me right, Carter?”

“Right.”

“Why?”

He looks at you like it’s obvious, like you should know why he hates your guts, “you’re a smart hotshot doctor, you’ll figure it out.”

God, you hated him as much as he hated you. You only wished he wasn’t so hot.

ER Rewatch: S02E09 Home

I've been thinking about the episode in which Harper cheats on Carter with Doug Ross.

Now, we can debate until the cows come home about "but they weren't even really dating" or "they only kissed like twice" or whatever, and I've seen comments like that, but the fact is that in the context of the episode, everyone, including Harper and Doug, treat it like cheating, so that's what I'm gonna call it.

I'm stuck on Carter's reaction. Because it feels...weird. For him. Carter is not someone who is unafraid of expressing either his opinions or his emotions. Sometimes to a fault, I will admit, despite my love for him. But in this episode, he just goes silent.

Like, okay, so Harper tells him what happened (after he got them Blues Traveler tickets! I love that insight into Carter's musical taste, side note). And he kind of just stares at her until Benton drags him off to surgery.

And then she comes to try to "explain herself." (Pro tip: there is no explanation for cheating). And he doesn't want to listen, but she just keeps talking and he stays until she's done and then he dunks his lunch in the trash can and walks back into the ER, without commentary.

And then! Doug comes to talk to him about it. And the basketball roughing scene ensues. And Doug is talking, and talking, and almost calling Carter names, and trying to justify their actions, and Carter is just angrily shoving him around the ambulance bay, and then when Doug is done, we get the only verbal reaction Carter has to the whole thing this episode: "I have. And now having to listen to you, I'm glad you've both made your peace with this. But I'm gonna need a little more time, if that's okay with everybody." And then he just walks back into the ER again. (side note, let us all agree that genuinely pissed Carter is really hot here)

I don't really have a conclusion on this one. I've been thinking and thinking about it, and I a) can't think of another situation where Carter's response was just silently walking away (though I say this with the knowledge that I've seen the show once, so maybe others can come up with some) and b) can't put my finger on *why* he would react this way in this specific situation. Any thoughts?

On an unrelated note, I kind of love that Mark, in his rants about Doug's poor decision making, also takes the time to ask Doug "what about Carter?" and break the news that Carter and Harper were going out. While I don't love that this is the part that seems to get through to Doug that he genuinely screwed up because it feels a little too "guy at the club who won't take no for an answer unless he thinks you have a boyfriend," I also kind of do love it because Carter continues to be the ER's baby boy. Doug, you hurt Carter! What kind of monster are you? I giggle.

I'm not surprised that Doug Ross didn't ask about John Carter when listing people he knew from County (because Doug Ross is an inherently selfish person and also slept with med student John's med student girlfriend) but I am disappointed
