I'm a Mess || Harper & Chase (closed)
Chase was a generally jovial person. Brett had told him many times that her favorite quality about him was that he was constantly smiling. And Chase knew Toby loved his smile, because Toby would always smile whenever Chase smiled at him. It was his lot in life, to make people smile. He was okay with that. More than okay, he enjoyed it. He loved making people smile.
So as he stood here, staring at the one woman whom he'd shared more smiles with than anyone else in his entire life, he wondered why neither of them were smiling. Maybe it was the fact that he'd been kind of an asshole before he'd left New York. Maybe it was the fact that she'd been in Oxford before and had almost gotten engaged to Chase's best friend/boyfriend. Maybe it was the fact that Chase had been silently suffering his entire life because he could never have he one person he truly wanted.
"Harper."
Finally, that trademark smile spread across his face, though he felt like everything was moving in slow motion. It had been a while since she'd been in Oxford. He wondered if she was back for Toby... If so, she'd be sorely disappointed. Toby had a girlfriend who was pregnant, a husband, and a boyfriend. He doubted Toby would argue to adding more to that list. It was Brett who would keep things in line. Chase did his best not to giggle as he thought about how whipped Toby was.
"You're back," he spoke again, light laughter behind his words. What was the protocol for seeing a woman with whom you had so much history? Chase certainly didn't know. So, he did what Chase did. He was affectionate. Chase stepped in and wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tightly, not caring about the strange looks they were getting from people passing around them on the sidewalk. "I've missed you," Chase whispered, much more earnestly than he'd thought it would be. He'd meant to be all I've missed you! How've you been? Let's go get coffee and talk about you all day because I love you and you're perfect and you smell fantastic. Okay, maybe not the last part. But he'd much rather focus on her than his pitiful excuse of an unrequited love.
