dragons, it was often said, were creatures born of magic and dragons were a targaryen's weapon of choice so there was undoubtedly some truth in the quip though he suspected it was meant to rifle feathers rather than form the basis of agreement. 'but not all magic is equal, is it? and the days of sorcery are long gone.' he had walked the corridors of harrenhal long enough to hear the murmurs about alys but neither wagging tongues nor the remarks of the woman himself had phased him as of yet.

'any man who cowers at an unseen foe is a fool.' those who claimed to commune with forces of sorcery were oft little more than mummers and poor ones at that. 'in battle, one craves certainty and reliability, a sword may very well save a man's life but any fool who believes in the certainty of any so-called sorcery is like to last more than a moment.'

( alicent goes back & forth on it, but the only way to know is to inquire. yet, the idea of it makes her uneasy, worried she'll make a fool of herself somehow. but, she must also consider this alys being here might not be her own choice ... what does she do in that case ? )

hand continues to hold onto her wine glass, one leg crossed over the other as brown eyes silently studied the other. her green eyes, with depths to them, long black hair ... her features did not match up to those usually attributed to house strong. she's seen plenty of strong bastards for years. ❛ is what people say about you the truth ? ❜ asked alicent, ❛ as a child ... they make witches up to be haggard, evil, or up to no good constantly. ❜

suffering is a terrible fire; it either purifies or destroys.

Aemond was made of fire: Fire and Blood. That's what all the Targaryens were made of and had used to take. However, Aemond had never considered himself suffering. Had it been something he had pushed down and never spoke of? There had been the awful bullying he had endured from his own family as he grew up, the injustice of losing his eye and his father never defending him, and it seemed only to grow and grow as he got older. He was the son who should sit on the throne as Prince Regent and King. "What if it must destroy to bring forth something new? To make something pure? Why can't it be both?" He asked her while his attention stayed on the fire before him. His hand was holding a cup of wine, and he brought it to his lips to take a sip. "Can suffering do the same? Destroy and bring something better forth?" He turned to ask her. He was keeping some distance between them while they spoke. Her words made him ponder almost too much, but he enjoyed them as if they were the philosophy lessons he had taken back at the Keep. Aemond had studied it and attempted to learn from it.

harrenhal is not a place he has thought of in years, and a not small part of him hates to be in this castle at all. HE HAD HOPED NEVER TO SEE IT ( this was meant to be ser strong's seat, once, but that had been before ). had hoped never to be reminded of it, despite how an impossible order that was, with both its importance and its reputation. he had traveled regardless, following hearsay and whispers despite how futile and untrustworthy they had seemed. he believes those rumors not, and yet he had gone all the same. as he stares at the woman now, he wonders if it has been worth it in the first place. the remark only draws a sigh out of him, lips a serious line as he ponders for a second. “ it was not as a wet nurse the small folk spoke of you, my lady. ” he says instead, one of his hands grabbing his own wrist in an effort to keep it still. it works well enough, in any case. not merely a wet nurse, in any case. “ were they wrong ? ”

“ has anyone mentioned how ominous you sound, my lady ? ” eyebrows furrow, shifting in his place as he stares at her. the last words are said faster than the rest, almost forgotten, which he thinks is not strange, considering her words. surely someone must have mentioned it to her, however. he cannot be the first to think so, although perhaps it is not very polite of him to say it out loud, he realizes after a moment. still, he makes sure not to look away, as uneasy as her words had made him. it is his fault, perhaps, for asking in the first place. “ i do not believe in destiny. ” he still adds, tone certain. if he is at the doorway of anything, it shall be due to his own choices. destiny does not exist, he thinks, and so he does not believe in that, or anything of the sort. he does not believe in fate, or gods, or magic. he believes in dragons, but in nothing else.
