Dora Day Spent some time with Dora, we’ve had some rough patches the last couple of months. I’ve been advised to release her due to her “face aggression.” She has deliberately footed me in the face several times, the last time hooking my eyelid. I’ve fattened her up after exercising her with equipment, I feel she has the best chance at survival now that she’s heavy and in good physical shape. Soon I’ll make the trip down to South Texas and give her back to nature.
I think this is a great example of the size sexual dimorphism in these Harris's Hawks (and all raptors). The female (about a 1/3 larger) stands on the right and the male (or "tiercel," - derived from the Latin word for "third") stands on the left. It's obvious who's in charge here. Dora After ups and downs, this season has been rather bleak. It’s good to know her health appears to have stabilized, however we never made it to the field. I was more concerned with keeping her weight up after she started getting short of breath again. Now I have to decide whether I should just return her to the wild or try to build our bond over the summer. Just feeling a little defeated and hopeless :/
