Harry is the middle of the three Vandervort brothers, being a middle child was annoying to Harry at first becaue his parents had a tendency to overlook him in favour of his brothers (Especially Elijah, who demands to be the centre of attention) until he became a teenager and suddenly being overlooked meant freedom.
Being a middle child, he feels like he understands his neice Sapphire Vandervort particularly well, but he hopes she doesn't make the same mistakes he did.
He maybe went a little wild with the freedom in his late teens and early 20's, but he eventually knuckled down, got into finance and married Layla's mom.
Harry never really wanted kids, but his now ex-wife did, desperately. It should have been a sign that they were incompatible and never going to work out. But Harry wanted to make his wife happy, so he agreed to have a baby, hoping it would fix their marriage and he would grow to like fatherhood.
Spoiler alert: none of that happened. He resented his wife and child, and their marriage broke down completely and eventually his ex wife moved to California with their daughter, Layla, and Harry could go back to the bliss of being a child-free bachelor.
He started his own finance company and he's doing very well for himself.
Eventually he met his second wife, and his new step daughter Lola Mercado, it was a bit of a whirlwind romance he admits, but he's happy.
Layla was out of sight and out of mind until she wasn't. She didn't even get an invitation to her fathers wedding, or meet his fiance before they tied the knot. She's angry and understandably so when she watches Harry play happy families with Lola and her mom.
