Hello, I read Haru wo daiteita, Alive and afterward, can I ask you what do you think of the relationship between Iwaki and Katou's nephew, Yousuke? I am quite confused,, because in Afterward they live together and they have very close bond, but for me Katou is irreplaceable.I really would like see what other people think about that

I personally found the idea of Yousuke living with Iwaki to be okay but it was the other things surrounding it that made me either uncomfortable or pissed off.

I honestly didn't like the inclusion of Shou and his boy toy. (I'm obvious not a fan of them) I didn't feel comfortable about Youka showing the pseudo pedophilia moment that occurred in the series (a moment that was a exclusive chapter for either ALIVE 2 or 3)

I don't think Youka was ever trying to replace Katou with Yousuke. I am making the assumption that he was always meant to represent the child that Iwaki ALWAYS wanted with Katou. That theme and symbolism is seen in the chapter that Yousuke is born and represented in through the special connection the two share. (Which could also be a hint to the reincarnation theme of the series)

The special connection can also be a reference to the special bond between Iwaki and Katou. Not focusing on the problematic factors to their relationship, especially in Afterward, Yousuke is meant to be Iwaki's anchor. Yousuke knows that he could never replace his uncle (the memory of him spending time with Katou) but also knows that Iwaki would never see him as such and would always see him as an extension of himself (family) and Katou. To the fandom, mostly, and me, Yousuke is Iwaki's baby more so than his own mother.

I could be wrong but, Iwaki either breaks the cycle or reinvents the cycle by continuing to live which leads to them meeting again in the afterlife. How I personally view it is by thinking of the finale of The Good Place. I won't spoil the show but Iwaki finding peace and meeting Katou again in the afterlife reminds me of that shows' finale.

In conclusion, Yousuke was never meant to replace Katou but a symbol for a hopeful future and better tomorrow and Iwaki's anchor. I hope this answers your question. 😅👋🏾🙏🏾

I made this fanart of Haru wo Daiteita in 2004 when I started to paint seriously. 16 freaking years ago. It is almost 20 years since I first read this manga and made these two my favorite couple. But then, there’s that ending. I just can’t 💔😭

In my mind, they're both still alive, sitting on a couch, eating dinner together while talking about their day, redecorating their house, or maybe holding hands while they're on vacation. And eventually they'll grow old together. That final chapter doesn't exist.

I'm going to pretend I don't know harudaki has ended. I can't acknowledge that awful ending. I can't accept my favourite manga -a love story about growing up together, facing everything as a couple, and learning to be in a healthy relationship- ended like that. I'm sorry, I can't cope. I prefer to remember haru wo daiteita as the journey of two soulmates that, at last, can be together, and be happy until the end of times. I don't care, for me Katou and Iwaki are in their home making dinner, I'm calling fanon discontinuity on this one.

Katou: Never had one before. This'll be a new experience.

Iwaki: The best part is the dessert.

Katou: [smirking] Dessert is always the best part.

[Antonio pops the wine bottle and pours their drinks while the other two serve them their first dish]

Katou: This smells so good.

Iwaki: It does.

Server 1: The first meal is stuffed peppers with quinoa and black beans.

Katou: Thank you.

[Antonio and the other servers leave]

Katou: [picks up his knife and fork and begins to eat]

Iwaki: [starts to eat]

Katou: How does it taste, Iwaki?

Iwaki: Good.

Katou: I'm asking because I know how you feel about multi-colored peppers.

Iwaki: Not much of a vegetable person but it's pretty good.

Katou: I know.

Iwaki: Do you like it?

Katou: Yes but I can't wait for the second course.

Iwaki: Neither can I.

[A few minutes later; Antonio and another server return with two more plates.]

Server 1: How was your meal?

Katou: Delicious.

Server 2: [takes the empty plates off the table]

Sever 1: [puts the second course in front of them] For the second course; it's Lemon Garlic Shrimp Tostadas.

Katou: Thank you.

Iwaki: Now this I like.

Server 1: Enjoy.
