Don't be fooled by the cheerful poster: this is a gritty dive into the seedy underbelly of Tokyo, a world that preys on the desperate. Some of the stuff that happens to the characters is pretty hard to watch, with one particular moment that is downright horrifying. The three-act structure keeps things interesting until the very end, and the bond between the characters had me seriously invested in their well-being. This role allows Takumi Kitamura to show a very different side of him, and Go Ayano is as solid as always. Yuta Hayashi already made a great impression in the stunning Happyend, but this performance tells me he has the potential to become one of the leading actors of his generation. The visuals and the cinematography are also pretty fitting for the story. I had never seen any of Koto Nagata's work, but BAKA's Identity has impressed me enough to keep an eye out for her future projects.
