Small ramble about why The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi movie is so dear to me.

Kyon throws away the chance at a "normal" life with a shy girl who likes him, without any Haruhi or the SOS brigade. He ADMITS that life without Haruhi is miserable, that he can't stand the idea of not being part of her life even though he'd love to tell you it's it's all he ever wanted. But now? What's the point of it all if Haruhi isn't there?

Yuki gave him the choice: Hey you can stay here with your friends, a girl who likes you, no Koizumi or Haruhi, no espers or time travelers or aliens. This is everything you ever wanted according to your unreliable narration, everything you complained about never having. Guess what I want it too, I want to be "normal" too.

But Kyon says no. Because life without Haruhi isn't FUN. Life where he isn't the person who had to deal with her bullshit, where it's someone else in that position fills him rage because it's HIM that's supposed to be the one who grounds her. If he can't live in a world where he can create a new one with Haruhi just by saying I'm John Smith then what's the point?

The world where Haruhi is a god-like being and he's the main character pulled into her shenanigans is the one he belongs in because who the hell is Kyon if Suzumiya Haruhi isn't there to make life interesting?

Kyon accepting his "abnormal" side, stepping on the version of him that tries to intellectualize everything and turns his head away from what's right in front of him, being forced to confront himself in this weird way gives me goosebumps every time I watch that scene. There's something about Kyon in particular that calls out to my soul, to the person I am but will not let myself be.
