Matchmaking Mishap
Unmarried at twenty-two was a sorry state to be in. Well, less so for a man than a woman by most social standards, but from the way Isley’s parents constantly stressed about his lack of a wife, one might think it was the end of the world. Isley himself was in no rush to settle down, but being an only child, his parents were understandably desperate for him to find a wife and give them a grandchild.
This wouldn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the plan his parents hatched to fix it. They intended to find a wife for him. Now, arranged marriages were a fairly common practice. The fact that they’d resorted to it wasn’t much of a surprise, nor was it really a problem on its own. The issue was that the young woman they chose happened to be far, far out of Isley’s league. In fact, she was the princess of some distant and foreign kingdom.
When Isley’s mother heard rumor that the princess was being pressured into marrying, she immediately hatched an uncharacteristically ambitious and sneaky plot. Long ago, their family had served a branch of nobility notorious for their scandals, which eventually led to a muddled and confused bloodline. Posing as one of them wasn’t terribly glamorous or respectable, but it was believable. Given the family’s history, it would be quite tricky to prove Isley wasn’t somehow related to them, even distantly. And posing as someone of noble descent, disgraced or otherwise, was all it took to open the way for his parents to request an audience with the princess.
To Isley’s shock and discomfort, it worked. He found himself sitting up against a wall in a neat line with about thirteen or fourteen other men, all of varying ages and races. Even in fine clothes purchased for the occasion, he looked horribly drab next to them, and was completely out of place in the opulent setting of the palace. His only consolation was that the people of the palace spoke the same language as him, though their accent was much different. That at least meant Isley would be able to communicate with the princess if necessary. The stressful part of realizing they shared a language was that he did so by being instructed to sit still and keep quiet in anticipation of the princess’ arrival. She would be there soon, and she would have to pick one of them.
Isley had never been so nervous in his entire life.
