Okay.I have been putting this off for awhile just to let the game sink in and from various angles. So I’m just gonna put stuff down as well as my interpretation of Lorelai and themes in it.
Many had said this was the weakest game in the series and while I agree to an extent I realised something else.
-Tone of the Games
The games all have similar style. The dark, gritty, wtf is happening feel. However if you look closely, they differ somewhat.Which to quote Jesse Cox “Play as the Character”.And it hit me.
Look closer at our Protagonists.
The Cat Lady reflects a jaded and tired woman in depression. Hence the dark art direction.
Downfall reflects a man and woman gone mad, paranoia, and having issues about self, and relationship. High Contrast and clashes.
Lorelai had much more colour because not only you are mostly in the real world, even in the Otherworld. This is because Lorelai sees the world that way. She is a fresh innocent bright eyed girl out of high school, skipped college to work and have yet to sink into the depraved society. But in the bad ending, this colour starts to become less (the rain scene)
-Queen of Maggots
We all know that this game was supposed to tell us more of the Queen of Maggots, somewhat her origins and her connection to humanity. Throughout the game, we see that she is predictably, supposedly, grooming Lorelai into her successor, the new Queen.
The Queen is a manifestation of the devil in people, and feeds on the sins and depravity of mankind. It does not think, it simply takes. Hence her giant form that exists in the tunnels.Possibly symbolising the complex labyrinth of human hearts.
However, the Queen did not die.She can’t and she never will.As long as men exists.
So with the old Queen dead, killed by Lorelai, there’s someone to take her place. In my opinion, its Greta. The old lady who warns you the devil always wins.
Hear me out.
Only a person who has come across and experienced the power given to the Queen of Maggots should know of her.Greta did. Greta is another Lorelai. She is what she becomes if she fails. An old person filled with regrets. Lorelai in the bad ending who grew old basically. With nothing and no one to live for.All she has left is the little house in the field of her heart. Her humble Kingdom.
And Greta gives you the power to change your fate. How not to be her.
-Characters
Joe and Ivy Davies probably will forever wander in the hell they made.(Hint, Joe’s cameo in-game before you retrieve the axe)
Going deeper. Susan. Lorelai. The queen. They symbolise The Furies or The Fates actually. The girl, The woman, The Crone.
We know that Susan is well and cherry, and Mitzi remains in spirit with her. Following Al’s story, either as the cat, or a ghost.Since we don’t know ideally which ending is canon and based on Downfall’s endings in Susan’s POV. That’s just my conclusion that Mitzi did pass on. But she is there. Susan’s power to not die should still be there and thus she oversees the lives of men and sends them to the queen.
Lorelai judges the lives of men. As we see in Al’s story. She doesn’t directly kill them. She decides what their fates are.
The Queen consumes the lives of men.She is the end men will meet.
-Jimmy the Traveller
The entire game, if you take out the supernatural context and parts. Its basically a girl who just became an adult with a shit family life.
The domestic abuse caused her to possibly leave home and she found refuge with her neighbour.Along with her sister. While she tries to get a grasp at work. However, along the way she meets a shady old woman making her do shady things. And that’s where she meet’s a friend. Who possibly is connected to said old woman and knows he needs to help Lorelai get out of the mess. At the same time he begs Lorelai to “Wake him up”. Depression maybe (with how he sleeps so much) and the fits of rage ( as a crow )
And in the good ending, she does. And they became each other’s pillar of support.
Jimmy symbolises the friend you never knew you needed but they are there beside you.
So all in all that’s my take on this so *shrug* That’s it for now I think.
