There’s a hundred reasons that Alec requests to be sent to the LA Institute only part of which is to do with his parents and the knowledge that the Lightwood name was weighted with the need for redemption because of his parents’ deeds. It was something he accepted ━ the responsibility falling to him as the first born ━ but it’s an impossible task if Maryse and Robert cannot firstly be honest and secondly if they will not trust him to do so. The only option is to be stationed elsewhere, at a different Institute with different leaders and different mentors wherein he can make himself better known not as their son but for his own intelligence and deeds. And though it means being away from his parabatai, it doesn’t diminish their bond. Jace understands more than anyone why Alec must do it.i

And the LA Institute is keen to work on profiling future demonic activity and attacks with a mix of science and magic. Algorithms and spells. It’s incredible.
