One of the things that I really enjoy most about Alec is that he’s young and he’s still discovering all kinds of things about himself. For the majority of his life, Alec didn’t feel like he fit in and more than that, believed part of himself was wrong and was broken. That he couldn’t ever divulge or acknowledge that part of himself because it wouldn’t fit in with this preconceived notion of what it meant to be a warrior and a leader, and even more importantly, what it meant to be a man in his society that he occupies. 

A massive part of his character growth, and one that I hope I do an okay job of, is beginning to understand and explore this side of himself, whilst learning to accept himself and to challenge what he has always considered the ideal. Jace, in part, is the epitome of this ideal to Alec and so it’s not really surprising that he should love and have feelings for his parabatai from a young age. He was strong and smart, swift, fearless, confident to the point of being a little cocky, inherently sexual in a completely heterosexual way. Now I’m not saying Jace was perfect but in Alec’s mind, Jace represented all of these things that made the ideal male shadowhunters (although he could use to dial down the sass and the recklessness a little). 

NOW I AM GETTING TO ANSWER YOU QUESTION I PROMISE, but I feel like I needed that as a preface because Alec has spent so long with this notion that there is an ideal and measuring himself against it – naturally he never comes any where close. So one of the things that I enjoy most about Alec is exploring himself coming into himself whilst facing all these other challenges; valentine, trouble with the family, any various storylines depending on the au or the particular plot. And so, unless otherwise discussed or planned ahead, in general canon verses Alec is still in that exploring phase and finding out what he likes and what it means to be a gay man and how he best enjoys that. 

Alec hasn’t naturally settled into any one definition or one role.

What does it do?” He had opened his mouth to ask another set of questions before inhaling sharply and yanking his arm away just as he finished, clutching it to his chest. “That hurt!”

Alec is hardly offended when the arm is ripped away and the other looks at him like he mortally wounded him. Putting the stele away, Alec rolls his eyes. “Of course it hurt. I basically just branded your skin.” Standing up, he motions to the rune. “This should improve your sight. This world is filled with things… like magic and demons, vampires and warlocks and werewolves. Most of them want you dead. Jonathan Morgenstern, in this life, is a genocidal monster. You share the same face…”

Magnus opens his mouth to argue but stops. He knows Alec is a soldier. He knows any fight could take him out. But that’s not the same as what Magnus and the downworlders are facing. They aren’t making a choice. They’re being targeted. The entirety of their people could die. He opens his mouth but he stops. He stops. His shoulders round forward as he lets out an exhausted sigh.

But Alec’s next words are sharp as any weapon to his heart. It lands deep and painful and tears him apart. Alec is not wrong. He will have to live with this for a very, very long time.

“If I’m willing to take that burden, can’t you see how important this is? Why I have to do this? As angry as I was… am… I still love you. I’m still in love with you. But I cannot risk letting all of my people die.”

His hands are foster so tightly he can feel his nails cutting into his palm. He’d promised himself he would be strong, that he would stay hard and angry. He would not forgive or be soft. But it was Alexander. And he’s already broken down so many walls.

“I will regret this,” he says, sure that it’s true. “And I will love you. But if I stay, if we all stay, we will die. Entire races, murdered. The only plan that guarantees their survival.”

Alec doesn’t understand and he knows that, knows that he can’t possibly understand what it’s like to have the weight of his entire people on his back but he knows what it’s like to be responsible for another losing their life. For holding the fate of his men and women in his hands, his soldiers. So what more can he do? What can he say that will change Magnus’ mind? Because in his mind he is doing the right thing and picking the best option from a list of hopelessly tragic ones. 

“I wish I could guarantee your safety… guarantee their safety. All of the down worlders. But I can’t. I can’t honestly tell you that Valentine won’t be successful. I can’t tell you that there won’t be a lot of bloodshed and many will lose their lives. I can’t guarantee that your people will survive but if you go, Magnus? You’re giving up on good. I’m not saying the Clave is perfect, I’m not even saying they’re right, but if we fight together Valentine won’t have a chance. We can make the Clave listen… renegotiate the Accords. Negotiate sanctions and rules for all, not just the down worlders but nephilim, too.” 

It’s a desperate plea and he knows it even as he takes hold of Magnus’ wrist, fingers closing around the small beads of his bracelets. But it’s possible isn’t it? This thing? That sacrifice could give rise to something better. “They don’t understand. Neither did I. We can make them.”

“That’s me, dear,” Jace says, an eyebrow shooting up, “memorable until the bitter end. Aren’t you glad we’re parabatai now? Only way for you to have a decent sense of dramatics, I swear.” He shrugs as the conversation turns to Magnus and Alec, before rubbing a hand awkwardly over the back of his neck. “Don’t really see the point in not calling a spade a spade, I guess. ” He sighs. “You know, when everything with Clary was happening, I also had Valentine to worry about and we were brink of the war, and it didn’t help keeping my mind off of her, either. Was–Is this, like, a permanent thing or just some time apart thing?”

“One of us needs to be level headed, not to mention modest,” he quips back. But he is thankful, has always been thankful, that he and Jace share that bond. And he appreciates his honesty even if right now it’s putting the archer under a microscope of self reflection that he has purposefully been attempting to avoid. Swallowing the bitter taste quickly rising in the back of his throat, Alec runs a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. He won’t– he wouldn’t talk to me. He still won’t talk to me.” But like Jace had said, what was the point in calling a spade anything but? “I think it’s permanent,” he offers a little quieter and the words feel like cement as his mouth tries to form them.

Allison

              “  go,  go,  go!  “   she  tells  scott  as  she  practically  PUSHES  him  up  the  stairs  in  running  from  her  brother,  a  soft  giggle  leaving  her  lips  as  alec’s  long  legs  are  half  a  second  late  when  she  slams  the  door  shut,  locking  it  and  motioning  for  scott  to  be  silent.  alec  is  protective,  he’s  always  been,  not  unlike  their  father  but  SOMETIMES  she  has  to  defy  them  if  she’s  ever  going  to  get  a  glimpse  of  what  it’s  like  to  be  a  normal  teenager,  all  the  moving  around  aside.

                  another  laugh  leaves  her  lips  and  she  leans  against  the  door  as  if  her  brother KNOWS she’s  there.   “  alec,  please!  “  allison  shakes  her  head,  looking  back  at  scott  and  then  to  the  door.  her  smile  fades  and  she  sighs,  an  audible  sound  as  her  forehead  rests  against  the  door.   “  you  don’t  have  to  do  this,  you  know.  i’m  allowed  some  PRIVACY  from  time  to  time.  “  she  argues,  rolling  her  eyes  fondly  even  when  he  can’t  see  her.   “  if  i  open  the  door,  promise  you’re  not  kicking  him  out?  “

Alison has no idea and as much as their parents had wanted to protect her, to give her a chance at something more and something different, he curses that fact and not for the first time. She was strong in her own way and she was smart, but it was not Alec’s place and so he had said nothing and been complicit in hiding the family legacy from her. Until now. Not with that boy in her bedroom and from the way she was giggling on the other side of the door he knew what that meant: she liked him. She liked him and none of this was going to end well. Not when she found out and not when their father forbid her from seeing him again. 

Leaning against the wall in the hallway, Alec lets out a sigh and rather than responding to something he can’t promise, he gets to work and within a few moments he’s undone the lock and pushes the door open. “I said I haven’t because I’m not a dick, not that I wouldn’t do it.” Hazel eyes focus on Scott and he narrows them, teeth gritted. “You need to go home before you get yourself into trouble. If our father finds you here, he won’t give you a head start.” Alec hopes that Scott is smart enough to take the warning in his voice. “And you,” he turns to Allison, “need to let him leave.”

Magnus

Magnus knew it was complicated. Eight years ago it had been complicated. Now there was Lydia and her death and the boys… all of making every small decision suddenly huge. What was too fast and too much. And Magnus didn’t want to push. Didn’t want to rush.

But what he felt for Alec? There had been no rushing, but also no holding it back. Not within himself. The feeling was there and had been nesting in his heart for eight years while they both lived separate lives. He caught his breath when Alec told him to just say it.

He blinks his eyes slowly, breathing in deeply, taking in this moment. “I love you,” he says, and feels fear flood him, cold and awful. Because he hasn’t loved anyone in over a century… and what if Alec doesn’t really feel this way. “I want this. I know… you made this life and it was supposed to be with her. And it seems almost cruel to want to…” He trails off, he’s not sure what it is he wants to say. “I want you and the boys and the small feet in face. I love you. I think I loved you the whole time.”

He blinks wet eyes and swallows thickly. Toby moves again, twists, and this time is at least mostly settled in the middle of them.

So they were slow, slower than they would like or at least slower than Alec would like but he’s balancing his needs as a person with those needs of the boys that depend on him. And whilst he owed it to himself to see what happiness could feel like, to see what romantic love might feel like, the archer also hasn’t been able to jump in feet first and let himself plunge. Not in the way that he might have eight years ago. And yet he feels it anyway, doesn’t he? That sensation of falling and not knowing if feet will hit the ground. He had run from it then, run from the uncertainty of it in another life time but not in this one. 

Lifting his hand, he cups Magnus’ cheek and brushes his thumb along his cheek bone admiring him even in the dim light of the room with just a few strands of sunlight slipping through the blinds. “It’s not cruel to want this with me, just like I hope it’s not for me to want you. Because I do.” Leaning closer, careful of the small boy beneath them, he brushes his lips softly again’s the other’s lips. “I love you. And if we didn’t have a mini me between us I’d do something a little more about it,” he half laughs and kisses him again. “We won’t waste any more time ever again, okay?”
