Hash Remix: You Rock My World Genre: romantic sit-com

While working part time as a lifeguard at a summer camp, 18-year-old Terry Hayward (Tom) rescues a floundering 14-year-old swimmer and becomes a low-key hero at the camp. The saved swimmer and her spunky fellow campers including Nina Roque (Zawe), form an admiration society called Hayward’s Honeys. Over the next few weeks of camp, he receives a “Hero” t-shirt and other small tokens from secret admirers. One in particular is a small stone emblazoned with the message “You Rock!” Terry, a lanky nerd in need of a boost, is secretly deeply touched. The rock becomes a good-luck charm.

Fast forward 12 years later, and Terry has glowed up in every way. He’s a rich philanthropist and motivational speaker who focuses providing engaging activities for underprivileged kids. He generates community interest by visiting schools and arranges an appearance at a secondary school. One of his official greeters is a very attractive Nina, who’s now a Year 8 teacher. In the assembly hall, Tom is greeted with a splashy presentation of “You Rock” signage. He displays his lucky rock but doesn’t share how he acquired it; instead he describes the occasions its positivity inspired him. Stealing glances offstage at Nina, it slowly dawns on him that she was one of his young admirers. She doesn’t let on but later over coffee, Nina makes a impassioned recommendation for him to take his mission throughout the U.K. and even beyond. He’s uncertain; on its face her pitch seems a bit ambitious but he is intrigued. Even more, he wants to know Nina better.

She is a former dancer featured in fire music videos back in the day and the founder of Rise and Shine, a promising, fledgling dance troupe on the brink of collapse, due to government cutbacks. Seeing this feisty person paralyzed by stress, two teen members of the troupe reach out to the Cheek to Cheek Foundation, thereby inadvertently linking two former young dancers who’d lost contact long ago.

The two dancers prepare the troupe for a gala, it surfaces they had parted over a clash of styles and commitment to discipline. They also have other unresolved issues. If the troupe is to thrive, the choreographers need to work on the art of collaboration.

Their publisher gets the notion to pair the two in the hopes of putting a new spin on the other’s perspective. Tentative at first, Zawe and Tom find new approaches to defining pleasure.
