#WelcomeBackCommunity: First Season Five HashMob

Remember the frantic days of May when we were biting our fingernails and hoping against hope that there would even be a Season Five?

Well, dreams really do come true because SEASON 5 SHOOTING BEGAN TODAY. (Please excuse the rare use of capslock, but it's warranted I think).

To celebrate this marvelous and auspicious day, please join us at 8:30 pm EDT for a very special -- and first -- Season Five HashMob. Let's welcome the team back to Greendale with #WelcomeBackCommunity and trend the hell out of this thing.

For those of you new to the Community Warrior tribe, here's a brief explanation of what HashMobs are.

Community HashMobs -- What are they all about?

So, what is a HashMob anyway, you might be wondering.

Short answer: A HashMob is the Community Warriors version of a "flashmob," only on Twitter. Like a flashmob, #Community fans gather online at a specific time & tweet the hell out of a selected hashtag. The goal? To get Community trending. Big time trending.

Longer answer: Shortly before the start of Season Four, the dynamo @violincatherine & a bunch of fans on Twitter were trying different things to raise the show's profile.

One idea that stuck was the Twitter army. The goal: Trend the show weekly. Organize fans to tweet at the same time with the same unique hashtag, tied to a particular theme each week. The idea was to excite people to respond to a specific question & get fans involved in reading, favoriting, responding & re-tweeting - all using that hashtag.

Another purpose was to introduce fans to each other & get more of them to follow each other and join the group. Dubbed "Community Warriors," the network of fans grew each week.

This group of people are the most fun, the most dedicated & the coolest group of fans (and friends) on Twitter. The core group was joined by Redditors, AV Club members, Live Journal fans, & loads from Tumblr.

The tweet storms took place not on Thursday during the show -- which was @nbccommunity's territory -- but on Wednesday night. Why? Because if a show that wasn't even on that night could trend each week, those fans had to be dedicated.

One final ingredient was asking people to watch on Thursday night at 8pm, live. As the season went on it became more and more important to pull ratings up, and we hoped to help.

Originally called "That Thing We Do on Wednesday" -- which obviously never caught on -- one of the gang said, "Hey, we're just like a flash mob... We're a HashMob!" The name was brilliant, so it stuck.

As the scope of the whole project grew, @CommunityNut teamed up with @violincatherine and @maegwen to form a dynamic team. Together they were unstoppable.

Each week the team organized the event, selecting a hashtag, creating the Tumblr post, and then tweeting it to everyone -- @nbccommunity began re-tweeting, as did @CommunityGiveaw. @Community_tv joined in. Our friends at @dailyrehash and @zeebox also trumpeted the events.

Even cooler, the cast broadcast the HashMobs to their followers, particularly @yvettenbrown & @joelmchale.

Some of our HashMobs: #WatchCommunityBecause, #IAmACommunityFan, #YouWillLoveCommunity, #ThePuppetsAreComing, #OnlyInGreendale, #KeepCalmAndWatchCommunity, #WhyDidIGoGreendale & many more.

HashMobs succeeded in trending #Community each Wednesday through the entire season. An extra night was added, the hour before Community aired, always focused on Watch Community Live.

At the close of the season a number of special events were held, most notably #RenewCommunity. Over two hundred fans were given custom made avatars for their Twitter account, with their photo & "Renew Community" emblazoned on it. That HashMob was a tremendous success, trending worldwide.

#WeLoveJoelMcHale was also a huge success with Community fans -- no surprise -- and also trended for some time. One of Joel's friends tweeted him to say "Congratulations on trending without dying."

And, obviously, #WelcomeBackDanHarmon was insane.

The cast has been incredibly sweet to us, and gave us special thanks after the renewal was announced. A group of fans met Joel at a Soup taping this summer and, after we explained who we were, he thanked us profusely, saying "You guys moved mountains, you've no idea."

Community Celebrates Fans & We Celebrate Them!

Dan & the Gang are back!

Community is returning to Comic Con & holding their panel on Sunday, 7/21 at 1:50 local time, titled “Celebrating the Fans."

We want to celebrate Community in return by throwing a HashMob & trending during the panel - showing our excitement for Season 5!

Using the hashtag #WeLoveCommunity, tell Dan, Alison, Danny, Gillian, Jim, Ken, Yvette (don't forget Chris & Andy!) (And Joel, who will be there in spirit) (And Donald) how much, and why, you love the show. What are you looking forward to in Season 5?

We're also trying to get people attending Comic Con to spread the word to Community fans. Are you going? Why not print out some of our flyers & pass them out on the Autograph & Hall H Lines?
