Correct me if I'm wrong because English isn't my native language but I've got a funny explanation for fandom meta :

When I say I'm a Starscream apologist, it means "I see him committing many crimes and still love him. Maybe I love him because he commits crimes and I support women's wrongs"

When I say I'm a Rodimus defender, it means "I see him committing crimes and deny that they're crimes in the first place. Your Honour my client pleads not guilty"

Basically imo the line between character apologist and character defender is very thin and you cross the border by going nuh-uh when someone brings up said character's flaws.
