Is that not better than simply throwing in the towel?” Mito levelled him with a deadpan stare, single brow raised- entirely unconvinced by his fatalistic outlook. Change was not a simple step, it was a gradual momentum. Tomorrow could always be a better today, so long as you didn’t stop looking forwards. 

 “Hashirama is fully capable of being an idealist, that I will freely admit- but he never stops pushing, he never gives up. He often speaks of you as if you are equals, Uchiha-san. I hadn’t taken you for a quitter.”

“Now now, when have you ever been one to appreciate that which comes easy?” It seemed simpler to banter, to let her oft-controlled tongue free then to recall what this meant- that Madara wasn’t merely troubled, but had actively broken with their fledgeling village. 

Hashirama had told her of the nonsense he’d been speaking shortly before disappearing- that Konoha was a failed experiment, that they’d be better serviced abandoning the bud that was just beginning to flower… but few of them expected this. 

“I swore when I came here to protect this village and its people with every breath I’d take henceforth… just as you did. We swore bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood with these people. Will you reneg on that vow now? Turn your back on all you’ve helped bring into the world?” 

She met his gaze, her green eyes piercing in the dark- the dark he’d been using to approach the village under the cover of stealth. The dark she’d used to intercept him. 

“Come home, Madara.”

“Typical,” Izuna thought— that his brother would cast aside the concern of his own wellbeing to focus his attention on his little brother’s. Despite the pridictability, Izuna knew it wasn’t entirely uncalled for. He had experienced a couple close-calls during their last battle, much to his embarrassment.

“I’m alright,” he replied aloud as he surveyed the aftermath around them. His shoulders sank at the body count. He could only imagine how exhausted Madara was really feeling as the unspoken truth hung in the air. “We should get going. Do you have any wounds?”

there was no time, he had to act fast, but then again NARUTO was reckless with his actions and most of the time he NEVER thought anything through. of course that was his fault alone for being that dumb- he called it bravery.

he dared to say something, but suddenly he felt the lips of the other crash against him. his eyes widened, his heart started beating rapidly against his chest. he was never expecting this sort of action, NOT EVER. but it sure caught him off guard. but the kiss was hard nonetheless, rough, he felt his teeth crash against his own, and without hesitation naruto pulled back, gasping for air.

Minato had heard the order, and did his level best to follow it. One did not need to be a natural Sensor to feel the burning, malevolent chakra that rolled through the forest like wildfire. Sentient, pissed-off wildfire.

The squad scattered, leaping from tree to tree. It made sense - lose one shinobi verses losing a whole pack - but Minato felt isolated. Unsupported. And that burning presence was right there, or so it felt.

Minato kept running.
