I just had a horrible thought. In the Shannon hale books, it was established that Maddie can do anything, as long as she doesn’t know it’s impossible— such as sitting on the sides of walls or jumping from one floor of the building to another. It’s only once someone tells her it’s impossible, she’s no longer able to do it. However, what if she can only hear the narrator because she doesn’t know it’s impossible yet?? No one believes she’s actually talking to them, so no one has told her it’s impossible yet. But what if someone did?? I feel like she and Brooke would be SO sad if that happened
Possible ideas on EAH dynamics (unrequited/complicated love edition) Part1
(Most of these are just ships that I put here based on the concept of "hey, wouldn't be fun if X was into Y and that's why X acts like...?", I myself love romance but I also love when a character is in love and their love is not required so they learn something about it while being angsty)
So, I hope you enjoy c:
Kitty to Lizzie:
They're best friends that escape this horrible situation that was happening in their country, both of them without the guidance of their parents. Yes, they very much have the support of the White Queen, Mad Hatter and Maddie but I feel they rely a little bit more on each other, so, for Kitty is painful to have this person that means a lot to her, gets her like probably no one else gets her and loves her, just doesn't love her the same way.
Sparrow and Duchess:
There's a reason why I put a "Sparrow and Duchess" and not "Sparrow to Duchess"
And I think they enter the category of "complicated" like I see him being really into her but her being really obsessed with Daring, at the same time he tries not to lose his cool so he dates other girls, while she has this feeling she's getting left out but at the same time she doesn't want to be in a relationship and he's like that as well. They're uncoordinated and when they're close, it becomes a mess.
Apple to Raven:
Yeah, Raven is that person that Apple will never be able to control or impress, due to all that happened. After all they have been through, though, she's lucky to be considered for Raven as a friend, but she'll always wonder how is to be loved by her, when she looks at Raven having dates or talking about someone she's head over heels, Apple will not complain but she'll wonder what would that feel like for a really long time.
Maddie and Brooke:
I don't see them as a one-sided thing, it seems, but it's not.
I feel the biggest problem goes with Brooke, like, people might call Maddie "Mad" but she doesn't mind, meanwhile, we have this, another dimension girl (who also does have the responsibility of narrating the story), she cares for Maddie, she loves her, but she doesn't want for Maddie to still care about her, make her lose her time with someone she cannot physically reach and that will not be able to grew old with; Maddie just yapping to Brooke waiting for her to also share some stuff about her and getting hurt bcs thinking probably is a one-sided type of crush (that on top of that is impossible to escape bcs whatever she is Brooke is there) suddenly Brooke doesn't talk to her and she, well she cannot understand why.
Anyone to Cedar:
I love Cedar as a character. But being in love with Cedar is probably the canon event of someone (not for the weak), like, let me clear myself: she's an amazing person, a sweetheart, the thing is that she has this constant dilemma whether or not she's a person, so you just have to translate that to how she feels about relationships (Shipping her with whoever you want, Cerise, Raven, an OC) and you might find that 95% of the time Cedar might just reject and being angsty bcs she cannot love and if she can she cannot recognize it AND THA-
Giraffe's EAH Ship Tier List: Hatterator
Requested by @athena-xox
Oh. Oh no. Another one I might have to use the shame zone for. I have not read The Legend of Shadow High by Shannon Hale. Brooke narrates that book and is basically the main character which means I am missing SO much information on her. She's in the show, she's in the show a LOT and I watched the show. It's not like with Prudence and Charlotte where I don't know who she is or how she ticks. But as I understand it, a decent amount of Hatterator ship fuel also comes from Shadow High. And I would consider it sinful to rate something like KittyWood without having read Once Upon A Time and A Wonderlandiful World.
Tell you what. This is going in the shame zone because I can't rank them in good conscience without having read Shadow High. BUT I will still pick them apart and inform you what my hypothetical ranking would be if Shadow High wasn't a consideration.
Starting off strong, Brooke is like a MASSIVE Maddie fangirl. Maddie is one of her favorite characters (I can relate lol). She breaks the laws of the universe to chit chat with Maddie. And I mean, so do her parents, but all her parents are grumpy about it while Brooke is excited. Maddie is kind of her doorway into this universe and that's so important for her because EAH is her universe. Technically, she lives in narrator land, but the Ever After High cast is where all the people she cares about most live, and where she spends most of her time. She looks up to Maddie (which is kinda hilarious) as someone who is willing to ignore all the rules to protect the people she loves, who's willing to do brave and dangerous things for them, and who's generally just a ball of sunshine that's impossible not to adore.
Maddie also loves Brooke. Part of it is that conversations with any of the narrators is absolutely wonderlandiful and something Maddie loves doing so much. And unlike the other narrators, Brooke is so willing to talk with and pay attention to Maddie. She's just as involved in all this stuff as Maddie is and she listens to and likes being around Maddie. That first thing is very important for any kind of Maddie ship. She's crazy and off the wall and doesn't think linearly, and so many people brush her off as "just being Mad Maddie" again. They don't realize that she has important stuff to say and that following her lead actually creates a lot of solutions. Brooke is SO willing to follow Maddie's lead. It's Maddie's lead that makes her interference in the story possible in the first place.
Maddie and Brooke are also able to match each other's exuberance, and find each others "flaws" very cute and endearing. Maddie thinks Brooke's inexperience and lack of professionalism is cute and exciting to be around and is like. The only person who's able to support Brooke's meddling and congratulate her for a job well done. Brooke loves Maddie's zaniness and is able to see through her lack of focus and recognize there's a lot of profound stuff in there.
So they like each other a lot and their personalities vibe well! They're able to support each other where nobody else can! But I do think their relationship is hurt by Brooke's lack of physical presence in a couple ways. One of them being that Raven is Maddie's most important person and probably always will be. Brooke might accept and love Maddie's quirks in the same way Raven does, but Raven was the first, and didn't have all the advantages of knowing Maddie's thoughts and feelings and extra details about her that Brooke did. Raven also has the ability to defend and protect Maddie in ways Brooke can't. And I don't think Brooke would ever even want to dethrone Raven as Maddie's most important person. That's her best friend, the two of them are kind of a package deal.
Even in Raven ships, Maddie remains her most important person, and that's fine for most ships because the rest of the cast has other friends. Like. Apple has Briar and Ashlynn, she gets it. Cerise has Cedar and Ramona and Kitty and whoever else. Dexter has his siblings and the guy squad. They all get needing to share Raven with Maddie and have other people they can fall back on with that. Brooke totally understands needing to share Maddie, but she DOESN'T have other people she can rely on. She's just left lonely and on the outside, forced to wait for Maddie to come find her again. I don't think that kind of angst would be good for EITHER of them. It's a lot easier for the two of them to manage when they're just very close friends and Brooke can go and simp about Dappling or return to the world of narrators without feeling like her life is falling apart.
Brooke's inability to interact with the rest of the cast is also pretty rough. Maddie is a very socially isolated character. Everybody likes her, they really do! But with the exception of Raven, the other Wonderlandians, and Cedar, they don't understand her and it makes it hard for them to connect with her. A good Maddie arc is about Maddie making more connections with the Ever After characters and them learning to put their bewilderment aside and embrace some healthy insanity. Hatterator kind of does the opposite. It encourages Maddie to be off in her own world even more than she normally is, and makes everyone else even more weirded out by her antics.
So basically, there's an even amount of good and bad. Maddie and Brooke clearly adore each other, and have a lot of mutual admiration. They provide support for one another in ways that are lacking in a lot of other places, and they just get each other. But they also don't do a whole lot narratively, and I actually think they kinda do the inverse by closing both characters off from the rest of the cast. I honestly think I'd give them a C-Tier (better platonically) if I was actually rating them, but again, I'm also a loser who hasn't read the Hatterator book so I'm definitely missing a LOT of components.
Verdict: Giraffe's Shame Zone
Brooke x Maddie is really funny because you'll have a villain who's just doing their thing taking over the land whatever and that's all fine and dandy it's part of this story but then they mention something like wanting to kill that weird wonderlandian lady who hangs out with Raven.
And then all of a sudden Brooke angrily and physically wills her giant hand to come out from up above to take said villain away kicking and screaming, never to be seen from again. All the students look up in completely horror meanwhile Maddie's off in the corner giggling like
"Tehehehe. That's my girlfriend. :3c"
Listening to the legend of shadow high audiobook
Holy shit Brooke Page is head over heels for madeline hatter
What the FAUK!!!!!!!!!! /pos
No but seriously, I am thoroughly enjoying this, and Brooke's input and AHHHGESGHFHFHEJRHEJE SHE IS SO SILLY AND EARNEST ANF WONDERFUL TRULY THE BEST NARRATOR EVER probably helped by the wonderful voice actor, but her presence is so earnest, and comforting. She's literally just a teenage girl who is also an omnipotent being with no free will. she cares so much about these people who don't even know she exists....... She desperately wants to free herself from the chains of narrator society for the sake of protecting the ones she holds dearly
I LOVE LOVE LOVE HOW THIS BOOK IS GOING SO FAR
So like Legend of Shadow High huh
