i’ve had a lot of thoughts about the ‘soldier dude hallucinates some guy saving him and being with him while he was dying in the hospital and then meets that guy years later’ so here’s some character write ups and scenes.
Chris - 26. Soldier boy. Joined the military to pay for a computer science degree and has an IT job. Is missing his left leg just below the knee and the last two fingers on his left hand and his whole goddamn everything including his face is all kinds of fucked up cause he can’t afford skin grafts. is a very kind and personable but is also incredibly stilted and quiet and awkward as not only do his physical features tend to keep people from approaching him, but also his social anxiety and introversion he’s always had a problem with keeps him from meeting new people. As a result, he’s lonely, but he keeps himself busy with his hobbies (drawing, gym, arthouse films, his fish).
Rafael - 29. the teacher. Chris’ unknowing savior (kind of, not really). Teaches chemistry at a local high school. Is currently involved in a court case against his ex and has been struggling to ‘get back to normal’ after everything that happened with him. Is living with his younger sister at her house with her 5 year old daughter and was disowned by his parents before he graduated high school. Plays the saxophone in a locally popular jazz band and has a penchant for board games and video games (which he recently picked up again). He’s kind of a cocky asshole, very sure of himself, but he’s also a massive dork and a great/fun person to be around if you don’t let him get on his bullshit.
Lucy - 23. Rafael’s younger sister. Had a child at 18, is going to college for nursing, lives in a house paid for by her wealthy parents who baby her and want her and her daughter to have a good life. She’s a bit stuck up, has the same bluntness and stubbornness as her older brother, but is all around genuine and a lot quicker to trust someone as she’s a good judge of character. Has the same love of cinema as Chris and its what kicks off their friendship.
Mia - 5. Lucy’s daughter. Stereotypical overly chatty, friendly kid. Has a big love of rocks. Was the one who first started bothering Chris at the park and, despite his initial best efforts, would not stop.
random scenes:
- after a few times of Mia chatting his ear off where Chris and Lucy become fast park buds, Chris awkwardly asks if its okay to get the kid an inexpensive gift, to which Lucy is like ‘sure’. He gets her a small purple geode for her rock collection which cements him as ‘best guy’ in Mia’s book. This gift is the catalyst for Chris and Rafael meeting since Mia excitedly shows her uncle the rock and he is immediately suspicious of this park art man’s intentions for his younger sister and niece.
- the first time Rafael and Chris meet at the park where Rafael introduces himself as Mia’s uncle and says how much he’s heard about her park pal, and Chris abruptly excuses himself because he did not think this man he hallucinated while dying existed but he does???? Obviously, this comes off very suspect and for the next few meetings, Rafael assumes Chris is kind of a creep who just wants to be closer to his sister and niece when in reality he's an awkward person who’s just found out his ‘divine intervention’ is a real guy living ten minutes from his apartment building.
- Chris goes to a show where Rafael’s band is performing and is completely stricken by how very good this guy looks playing the saxophone and also how very out of his league he is. he meets the band mates after and it only cements that line of thinking. Of course, Rafael opts to spend the rest of the evening chatting with him, much to his band mates confusion.
- Rafael and Mia come over to watch some movies as Chris’ place. 1 and a half movies in and Mia and her uncle both fall asleep on the couch together. Chris has been avoiding drawing his forgotten muse this entire time, making up a lot of excuses when asked as to why considering it’s his hobby and he’s sketched literally everyone else but he does this time as Rafael is napping away on his couch. It’s strange because he has these memories of this man that aren’t real and he had these preconceptions and had almost deified him in a way for the first few years after getting his shit blown off. But Rafael is a real person who is not the man in his memories even if they have the same face and voice and Chris is trying very hard to separate those two which is why he immediately hides this new drawing with the other sketches guiltily.
- For Christmas, Chris finds out Rafael is going to spend the holidays alone since his parents don’t want anything to do with him and Lucy and Mia are going over there. So he invites him along to his family’s xmas get together. With some hesitation, Rafael agrees and has a lovely time with Chris’ family. When they get back from the four hour drive, they’re just chatting in from of Chris’ apartment building, neither wanting to say goodbye just yet. Chris’ leg kind of decides for them, stiff from the car ride and the cold, so they say goodbye and Rafael gives him a last minute kiss on the cheek as a thank you for the nicest holiday he’s had in a while. Back in his apartment, Chris bemoans to his fish the fact that he probably should’ve invited Rafael up but once again chickened out. His snowflake eel has nothing much to say on the matter. (unbeknownst to him, Rafael is also wondering if he should’ve invited himself up)

So here is something random that I was working on forever ago but didn’t continue. I’m not good at writing PN!AUs...but that’s mostly because I prefer R!PNAU...so...but here have this thing.
And I love the idea of the Guardians working at a toy store owned by North where they have to go by character names like Jack Frost and Easter Bunny...don’t judge me.
Hiccup turned to follow the sight of the nervous looking girl as she edged her way around the people on the street. She was young, about 10 or so and clutching the straps of her backpack in a white-knuckled grip. The man frowned when the girl glanced around skittishly before moving to cross the street, unaware of the sports car flying around other cars recklessly and speeding toward her. Hiccup’s hand shot out and grabbed the strap of her backpack, yanking her back onto the sidewalk and further into his protective grip. The car sped past them seconds later, dangerously close to the curb and the cars parked on the side of the road, and the two stared after it mutely before the girl jerked away and spun around to stare at Hiccup.
Large brown eyes widened and she fidgeted slightly at the sight of the tall lanky man. Her hand came up to fiddle with one of her pigtail braids. “Uh…um, thank you.”
He took in the child curiously and immediately green eye landed on the school crest embroidered on her uniform shirt. Knight-Moore Academy…this girl was definitely in the wrong place.
“You should be more careful.” Hiccup said quietly before running a hand though his messy hair. “What are you doing by yourself anyway?”
She looked away as if embarrassed and shuffled her feet a little. “W-well…”
“Are you lost?” Hiccup asked, crouching down to be on a more even level with her.
“…yes.” she admitted with a red face. “I tried to go back to my Jack’s work instead of him coming to get me.”
Hiccup blinked then made a soft ‘tsk’ sound. “Don’t you think he’ll be worried when he goes to get you from school and you aren’t there?”
She gasped and covered her mouth with her hands. Clearly she hadn’t counted on this Jack guy’s reaction to her being gone. She reached out frantically and grabbed onto Hiccup’s sleeve immediately.
“Can you take me back to my Jack?” she asked.
Hiccup hesitated, this could have the potential to end horribly…if Jack thought that he had taken her…then he sighed and scratched his cheek just under his glasses. She needed to be taken back and there wasn’t anyone else safe enough to take her…not that he knew of…he read the news. “I can take you back to your school.”
She nodded. “Okay!”
Hiccup stood up and was surprised when the girl immediately slipped her hand into his own, it was habit he was sure. She beamed up at him and he couldn’t help but smile as he fished his phone from his pocket and sent a one-handed text to Astrid telling her he’d be late then put it back and nodding to himself. A gentle tug of the hand and the girl fell into step beside him.
“I’m Emma.” she said after a moment.
He smiled. “I’m Hiccup.”
“Really? Your name is actually Hiccup?” Wide eyes turned to him skeptically and he nodded with a small laugh.
“My actual name is Heikki but most of my friends call me Hiccup…it’s easier to say too.”
Emma looked thoughtful. “Are we friends then?”
“I guess?” Hiccup nodded slowly.
“Good! I like you!” Emma decided as she swung their hands back and forth while they walked.
Hiccup smiled and laughed. “I like you too Emma. How old are you?”
“Nine and a half.” she answered automatically. “I’ll be ten in a few months though.”
Hiccup nodded and then blinked curiously when she stared up at him expectantly as they stopped at a cross-light. “Oh…uh…I’m 24.”
“My Jack is 25.” she said after a brief pause in which they darted across the street when the light changed.
Hiccup nodded again conversationally but didn’t know what to say in response so they continued onward in silence a bit longer until Emma seemed to decide that she wasn’t satisfied with that and began chatting about anything and everything that came to mind like children do.
xXx
“I’m out North, gotta get Emma!” Jack called as he tossed his apron on the chair behind the counter.
“Return with her!” North called back and a large hand waved through a doorway.
Jack slipped past Aster as the large surly man took his place. “I always bring her back I’m still working!”
He stepped out of the building and blinked rapidly in the sudden sunlight. He moved quickly down the street, heading toward the school where Emma would be waiting for him to come get her. He pondered on what to do for dinner, not taking much notice of people moving away from him. It happened a lot and he wasn’t concerned. People were quick to judge the punk outside of his job…Jack with his plethora of peircings and visible tattoos. It was hard for people believe that he worked at a toy store…
“Mr. Overland?”
Jack looked up surprised to hear his name and was even more startled to realize that he’d reached Emma’s school so quickly. Standing there in front of him was one of the teachers, Miss Rebecca the art teacher who was called Rapunzel by the children due to her long hair, and she looked worried.
“Uh yes?” he asked with a frown.
Rapunzel frowned in response, nervously tucking blonde hair over an ear. “What are you doing here? Is something wrong?”
Jack looked around and motioned toward the other parents gathering the children. “I’m here to pick up Emma.”
Green eyes widened. “But you already got her. She told one of the aids that she saw her ride and walked away.”
A cold feeling settled over Jack and he stared. “What? What do you mean she walked away? No one thought to check and make sure I was here?”
Rapunzel flinched back from the harsh tone and for a moment Jack felt bad because really she was probably the nicest teacher at Nightmare Academy. “I, I wasn’t aware that you weren’t here. I only just stepped out and got the list of children who left from the aid before she left.”
“My sister is missing and you let her walk out there without making sure!” Jack snapped angrily.
“Is there a problem Mr. Overland?” a new voice asked and Jack turned to glare at the woman.
Ms. Tremaine stood watching him with her usual calm face, grey eyes taking in his tense stance and scowling face. Jack sneered at the older woman with her grey hair in a perfect bun and her neatly pressed clothes. Ms. L. Tremaine was the headmistress of Knight-Moore Academy and Jack often felt at war with her…
He glared angrily. “Yeah there’s a problem! My sister is gone because some stupid fucking aid couldn’t do her damn job and make sure my sister was going to someone on the list!”
Tremaine regarded him calmly. “Mr. Overland, please refrain from the vulgarities. There are children in the area and we do not allow it on school property.”
“Do I look like I give a shit?” Jack demanded with a snarl. “My sister is MISSING!”
“I’m aware that you’re upset but you need to calm down.” Tremaine continued without emotion, her face frozen in collected calmness.
It only served to piss off the man even more and he glared. “You people don’t even care about Em at all!”
“That’s not true!” Rapunzel protested immediately. “We care a great deal for her! And I’m just as upset that she’s gone missing.”
Jack turned angry blue eyes on the woman before turning on his heel and storming away. Outwardly he appeared angry and inwardly he was freaking out. His sister was out there somewhere in the city! It was dangerous out there! He couldn’t stop the panic that filled his chest and stabbed at his heart. He couldn’t lose her! He could lose anything else in the world but not her and not her love! Jack dug into his pocket and pulled out his phone hoping that she’d gone to his job…
“Guardians of Childhood toy store, Easter Bunny speaking, what new memories can we help you make today?” Aster greeted almost robotically when Jack dialed the shop.
“Bunny is Emma there?” Jack asked immediately.
Aster was silently surprised by the question. “Na mate, she ain’t swung by here. Thought you were picking her up.”
Jack’s hands shook as he clutched the phone. “I was but she’s not at her school. Some stupid aid didn’t do her damn job.”
“Calm down mate. You’re angry and you do stupid stuff when you’re angry. I’ll give a call to Tooth; she’s out on delivery right now with Sandy. They’ll keep an eye out for the little ankle bitter. Just look around her school.” Aster stated, hoping to ease the worried brother.
Jack mumbled some sort of confirmation before hanging up his phone, shoving it into the pocket of his jeans, and running a hand through his hair. Where would Emma go? And why would she lie to someone from the school? Had she honestly seen someone that looked like him and was taken? He was broken from his thoughts by a familiar voice.
“Jack!”
Immediately his head shot up and he looked over to see Emma walking toward him, holding some strange guy’s hand. She was smiling and waving at him and he felt his heart stop for a moment before he approached them. The glasses wearing man stopped and released Emma’s hand immediately, allowing the girl to race into her brother’s arms and cling to him tightly.
“Emma don’t you ever disappear from school like that again! Do you have an idea how worried I was!” Jack said, dropping to his knees and crushing the small girl in a hug as she mumbled out apologies before looking up at Hiccup, his eyes flashing dangerously. “And you! You sunnova bitch!”
Hiccup took a step back as the scary looking man covered in white and blue ink rose and made a move toward him. He didn’t expect this at all and immediately his hands came up in a surrendering motion. This guy was going to kill him he just knew it!
“No Jack!” Emma grabbed onto Jack’s waist as Jack grabbed two fistfuls of Hiccup’s jacket and hauled him up to his face. “Jack stop!”
Angry blue eyes darted from the man’s face as he squeezed his eyes closed behind his glasses to look down at the girl tugging frantically on her brother’s shirt. Brown eyes were wide and filled with unshed tears as she kept jerking on the clothes.
“Jack stop it! Put him down right now!” she ordered through tears.
Immediately the white haired male dropped the other and Hiccup stumbled back to slump against the wall, clutching at his chest as his heart racing wildly. Thank the Gods for Emma…The little girl scowled at her brother before turning to the nerd.
“Hiccup are you okay?” she asked, tilting her head to the side curiously.
Jack made a confused noise. “Emma?”
“Jack this is Hiccup. Hiccup this is my Jack. He’s not mean all the time I promise.” Emma said motioning between the two. “Jack, Hiccup helped me. I got lost trying to get to your work so he brought me back.”
Hiccup got to his feet shakily and nodded when Jack looked at him. "I was just coming out of the store and saw Emma," Talk fast before he can hit you, "walking by. She was by herself and I was worried for her safety so I asked her why she was alone…" Stop detailing, he's starting to look angry again. “But I brought her right back here to her school because while I might not be a…” Hiccup paused and looked down at Emma who stared up at him. “…a bad guy others in the city aren’t so nice.”
“See Jack, Hiccup’s a good guy.” Emma stated, turning those soulful brown eyes to her brother.
Jack sighed and rubbed the back of his inked neck with a frown. Hiccup took the moment to run an eye over him. Jack was nice to look at he had to admit. Taller than Hiccup by a few inches, pale and thin but not sickly…six piercings that he could see and the edges of tattoos that disappeared under his shirt…white hair and absolutely captivating blue eyes…and then Jack was looking at him and fiddling with the lip ring with perfect straight white teeth and Hiccup found himself with the uncontrollable urge to do anything to make him stop.
“Thanks, for bringing her back. And sorry about the whole…bitch thing…” Jack apologized, pale cheeks turning a tad bit pink.
It was really adorable…what the hell! That thought jolted Hiccup from his thoughts and he cleared his throat. “Uh, yeah I get it…well Emma you’re back with your Jack now and I have to get going.”
“Jack! Invite him to dinner!”
Immediately both men looked down at the girl with surprised faces. Simultaneously their gazes met and Hiccup looked away first to fiddle with straightening his glasses as Jack looked back down at Emma.
“Why?” Jack asked.
“Because!” Emma began, her tone patronizing. “He did something nice and brought me back to you! We have to take him to dinner to thank him!”
Jack was dumbfounded and he rubbed his brow with a sigh. What was Emma trying to pull? He finally let his hand drop and looked up at Hiccup who was busying himself with something on his phone. He stared at the guy for a moment, taking in messy auburn hair and his oversized clothes.
“Um…” Jack began unsure, catching Hiccup’s attention. “Would, man I’m gonna kill her, as an apology/thank you thing would you like to come to dinner?”
Hiccup tried not to laugh at the pained tone in the voice he couldn’t help it. It was really too funny that Jack was humoring the girl. “I uh, appreciate the offer but I’ve got plans tonight.”
Jack nodded. “Right see Emma he’s got plans.”
“All week?” Emma prompted and the face Jack made caused Hiccup to bust out laughing before he quickly covered his mouth.
Jack’s lips twitched up into a small smile and Hiccup coughed, embarrassed. “N-no not really…”
“Okay then!” Emma chirped with a brilliant smile. “Tomorrow! We’re okay tomorrow right Jack?”
Jack nodded slowly, simply staring in surprise at the girl. And then he blinked when he realized what he’d just done. Before he had a chance to say anything the girl turned to Hiccup.
“We’ll meet you here tomorrow after school and you can come to work with us and then we can all go to dinner!” Emma decided with a grin.
Hiccup blinked several times and scratched his cheek before letting out a puff of air that ruffled his bangs across his forehead. He met Jack’s gaze over the girl’s head and the older male made a small sound before shrugging, clearly he wasn’t going to fight or argue with the girl in question anymore. It was up to Hiccup if he wanted to meet up with them.
“You aren’t gonna let this go are you?” Hiccup asked hopefully, looking down at Emma.
I don't know. Have some of the 7,000 wrds for River Of Fire.
"Come on! We're going to be late," calls Alma, pausing at the bottom of the stairs. She's clutching at the railing and shifting from foot to foot, far too wired up for standing still.
She can hear Darius moving around upstairs. A door slams and footsteps slam against the dark wood floor as he comes racing into view, taking the stairs three at a time. He almost drops his bag when he jumps down onto the landing.
There's water still dripping from his hair and his shirt is on wrong-side out. "We wouldn't be running behind if you hadn't taken so long," he scolds, but it's not anywhere near being serious.
They're too excited to really be angry at each other. By the time they make it to the front door, they've dissolved into fits of laughter as they push at each other, bumping shoulders and hips, swatting at arms, each one trying to be the first out the door.
It's a battle that Alma wins, as she ducks underneath of her brother's arm. "Too slow," she goads, taking off down the driveway. It's a winding thing and the gravel is loose beneath the soles of her sneakers. There aren't any streetlights this far on the outskirts of Haven, but the stars are bright tonight, brighter than they should be, and the entire world seems to be holding tight to their light. It makes the shadows in the nearby forest seem that much darker, but it also makes the world seem so much more surreal.
She can't help but think, each time she ventures out at night, that it's like she's walking through a dream.
Darius catches up quickly but he doesn't pass Alma. They run beside each other until they reach the end of the driveway, stopping beside the dented mail box and the lone dandelion that just never seems to wilt.
"Do you have the directions?" Alma asks, leaning against the mail box. The metal is cold against her skin. She regrets, for a moment, not bringing a jacket.
Darius nods and tugs a piece of folded paper out of the side pocket of his bag.
"Of course I do," he says, waving the paper in front of Alma's nose. "Maybe you should have spent more time getting stuff together, Allie. You would be up the creek if I had forgotten this."
Alma shrugs. "You never forget stuff like that."
"I might."
"You won't," says Alma, confidantly. She swipes the paper from him and unfolds it, glancing over the hastily written instructions.

There's a mark etched into the paper, too, just beneath the writing. It's a mess of curving lines and sharp edges, the sort of image that hurts your eyes to look at for too long. Hanna has drawn the sigil onto the page like she hasn't made Alma draw it countless times, and etch it into pieces of oak wood, and swirl it into the water of the bird bath out back.
