I love this quote, because it's so damned true. Reputation is something put on you and me and everyone else by other people. Character is something you and me and everyone else just ARE - all on our own. So reputations are exactly like shadows -- subject to change depending on the time of day, the lighting or someone else's personal perspective and can completely disappear under any one of those circumstances. Whereas character is strong and solid and has a permanency to it -- just like a tree. It is there and the same, no matter how or when or who is considering it. Reputation is never actually real.
