Class Feature Friday: Butcher Spirit (Medium Legendary Spirit)

Not every spirit of strength is a warrior. Other exemplified strength in the worst ways, fiends that brutalized and slaughtered regardless of innocence and society’s laws. Some were serial killers, others were ruthless soldiers and generals who commited war crimes in life, and other still might have been officers of the law tormenting others rather than serving justice. Regardless, upon becoming spirits that a medium can call upon, they are collectively known as butchers.

A variant of the champion, butchers used their great strength in life to cause fear and pain, savoring every emotion before destroying them and defiling the bodies. However, their brutality might attract those who need even more lethality than the champion normally provides, or whom have similar predilections.

Like all other legendary spirits, a butcher requires certain prerequisites to be called, namely the torture and bloodletting of at least 24 sapient beings, compounding their suffering. Then, the medium must vow to never provide medicinal aid to another, and finally demonstrate their strength, showing they can handle the butcher’s spirit in their body.

Like other spirits, mediums can accept greater power from butchers by accepting a taboo. In particular, butchers dislike the use of bludgeoning weapons, as they don’t shed nearly enough blood, not to mention the idea of inflicting nonlethal wounds. Indeed, all combat while under such a restriction must be to the death, or if surrender is accepted, it must immediately be met with torture and death to the captives.

Butcher spirits impart intimate knowledge of most common cutting weapons, particularly spiked chains, and they become particularly effective at drawing blood and ending the lives of the helpless in the hands of the medium.

Channeling the butcher’s malevolence, these mediums can make their weapons even more deadly in various ways, such as improving their ability to strike vulnerable points, slicing through multiple foes easily, or even supernaturally increasing blood flow in the wounds. By offering more influence, mediums can even gain the vorpal blessing. Be warned, however, for a butcher happily takes more influence when the medium feeds its bloodlust with the death of worthy foes.

If you’d rather deal extra bleed damage and buff up your slashing weapon with magical abilities than get an extra attack, this spirit may hold more appeal than the standard champion. Just realize that if your character wasn’t evil before, they will be after willingly going through the process of gaining the attention of one. Beyond that, I recommend a build that focuses on slashing weapons and close combat, perhaps branching out in order to worth with one or two other spirits.

More likely to be in the hands of an NPC medium, these legendary spirits are the perfect opportunity to bring some legendary murderers from your campaign setting back in a lesser form. Or perhaps even as a last hurrah of a recurring villain that finally died. If they fall under the serial killer concept be sure to figure out their methods for suspense and storytelling purposes.

While he was alive, Bildy the Bonecracker was a mountain hermit and notorious cannibal that preyed upon travelers. No one missed him when he died, nor when his risen mohrg form was laid to rest. However, Bildy never rests easy, and the spirit-witches of the mountain know that if they ever need bloody vengeance, they can call on him to get it, at a bloody price.
